2019 Cross Country Schedule Announced
Aug 19, 2019 | Cross Country
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State Cross Country head coach Ryun Godfrey announced Monday afternoon (August 19) the 2019 cross country schedule, with the Wildcats competing in seven events in all.
"After a few months of base work without any competitions, it is nice to get back to a routine with competitions because that is the fun stuff," stated Godfrey, who enters his sixth season at the helm in 2019. "The first competitions provide the opportunity to grow together as a team and to learn how to race together. Cross country allows for individuals to shine, but it is also a collective effort from each member to help the team become successful. We look forward to that challenge this year."
Entering their first match on Saturday, September 7, the Wildcats will look to start off the 2019 campaign strong when the team heads to Wichita, Kan., to race in the 71st annual JK Gold Classic. This is the third year in a row K-State will kick off its season at the Four Mile Creek Resort.
Last season, the men's squad came away with the victory in Wichita, Kan., recording 25 points to secure the win amongst four opponents, while the women's team scored 54 points to finish second behind host Wichita State.
After beginning in the Sunflower State, K-State will then head north to compete in the Jay Dirksen Invite on Saturday, September 21 in Lincoln, Nebraska. It will be the first time competing in the event since 2017.
K-State will then travel to Indiana twice in October with both the men's and women's teams competing in the Joe Piane Invitational on Friday, October 4 in South Bend followed by Pre-Nationals on Friday, October 18 in Terre Haute. It will be the first time competing in the Joe Piane Invitational, while it will be the first time at the Pre-National event since 2014.
Postseason races begin with the Wildcats traveling to Waco, Texas for the first time since 2013 for the Big 12 Championship on Saturday, November 2 before heading to the NCAA Midwest Regional, hosted by Oklahoma State, in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Friday, November 15.
K-State will look towards a repeat in last year's Big 12 Championship where the men's team placed in the top-five for the event while the women's team set multiple personal bests.
During last year's NCAA Midwest Regional event, the men's and women's team's both placed in the top-20 for their respective fields.
The Wildcats return 11 letter winners on the men's side and six letter winners on the women's side for the 2019 season. The men return three of their Top 5 scorers at the Big 12 Championship, including sophomore Cooper Schroeder, junior Ethan Powell and sophomore Dylan Brenneman. The women return four of their Top 5 scorers, including juniors Kassidy Johnson, Cara Melgares and Cayli Hume and senior Anna Keeley.
