
Women’s Tennis Claims Five Victories in Singles Play at the Marliss Gruver Invitational

AUBURN, Alabama. – The Kansas State women's tennis team began the 2019 fall season with five singles victories on the first day of the Marliss Gruver Invitational at Auburn's Yarbrough Tennis Center.
The Wildcats came out strong in singles competition as the team picked up three victories in the first round. Junior Rosanna Maffei and sophomores Karine-Marion Job and Ioana Gheorghita all picked up victories in the first match of their respective brackets. Both Maffei and Job posted three set victories, while Gheorghita defeated her opponent in two sets, with a swift defeat of 6-2, 6-1.
During the second round of the Flight A bracket, Maffei would clinch her second victory of the day with a defeat over No. 5 seed Anna Vrbenska from Ole Miss, 6-0, 6-4.
Moving down to the Flight B bracket, Gheorghita would pull off a gritty three-set comeback victory to advance to the semifinals round with a score of 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 against No. 1 seed Alexa Bortles of Ole Miss.
Both Maffei and Gheorghita would go a combined 4-0 record on the day to lead all Wildcats.
Job made a comeback attempt against No. 7 seed Tereza Janatova from Ole Miss in her second contest, but ended up falling in the third set, ending her match with a score of 3-6, 7-6, 3-6.
Senior Ines Mesquita would fall short in both of her matches as the Lourinha, Portugal native, dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 decision to Julia Deming of Kansas and a 3-6, 3-6 decision to Samantha Smith of Penn State.
The Wildcats will continue play at the Marliss Gruver Invitational on Saturday with the start of doubles play.
