DALLAS, Texas. – The Kansas State women's tennis team began the first day of the SMU Invitational on Friday (September 27), as juniors Rosanna Maffei and Ioana Gheorghita earned a doubles victory at the SMU Tennis Complex.
With an early loss to begin day one, Maffei and Gheorghita would bounce back to defeat the pairing of Tiffany Hollebeck and Nicole Petchey from SMU with a convincing set victory of 6-3 in the latter part of doubles play.
At the start of the invitational, the pairing first faced the duo of SMU's Sarai Monarrez Yesaki and Claudia Bartolome, battling down to the wire before falling 6-4.
Later in the afternoon, Maffei would begin her singles competition in the Hilltop Draw against Elise Mills from South Carolina in hopes of repeating last week's performance, in which, Maffei would turn in a four-victory performance in route to a Flight A bracket title at the Marliss Gruver Invitational.
Maffei would claim a first-set victory, 6-0, but stumbled in the match to lose in three-sets against Mills. She will face Sonia Smagina of Kansas at 11 a.m., CT on Saturday.
Gheorghita earned a bye in the Peruna bracket on the first day, advancing to the second round of play, where she will play Southern Miss' Katia De La Garza at 9 a.m., CT on Saturday.
