
Gheorghita Falls Short in Semifinals Match-Up on Saturday

DALLAS, Texas. – The Kansas State women's tennis team entered the second day of the SMU Invitational on Saturday (September 27) with matchups in the latter part of singles play. Junior Ioana Gheorghita would advance to the semifinals round in the Peruna bracket after a two-set victory in the second round.
Receiving a bye in the first round of the Peruna bracket, Gheorghita would look expand upon her recent success in fall play as she faced off with Southern Miss' De La Garza in round two. Gheorghita would pull away with a two-set victory coming at score of 6-4, 7-6 (6) over De La Garza to advance to the semifinals round.
In the semifinals match-up against Stephen F Austin's Tiboldi, Gheorghita attempted to close the gap in each of her sets after falling behind but could not overcome Tiboldi, falling 5-7, 3-6.
Redshirt sophomore Rosanna Maffei, who began her second singles match in the Hilltop bracket against Kansas' Smagina, took an early lead with a 6-4 first set victory. As the match continued, Maffei would let the last two sets slip away and fell to score of 6-4, 1-6, 0-1 (8).
In total this weekend, both Maffei and Gheorghita would record one singles win and one doubles win.
The Wildcats enter the final day at the SMU Invitational on Sunday, September 29 as singles play continues.
