Wildcats Return Home for DeLoss Dodds Invitational Friday
Jan 23, 2020 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Looking to keep the momentum going through four meets in the 2020 indoor season, the Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams will return to Ahearn Field House for the DeLoss Dodds Invitational, which runs from Friday-Saturday, January 24-25.
Â
Retuning after a year of postponement, the DeLoss Dodds Invitational will feature pentathlon and heptathlon events for both days. The Austra Skujyte Women's Pentathlon will kick off the meet on Friday at 10 a.m., CT while the Steve Fritz Heptathlon will take place at 11 a.m., CT for the first day and then continue into Saturday with a start time of 9 a.m., CT. For the rest of Friday's schedule, all participants will partake in field events beginning at 4 p.m., CT and then track activities will start at 5 p.m. CT. Saturday's itinerary will feature field activities at 11 a.m., CT and before heading into the track portion of the meet around 3:30 p.m., CT.
Â
"The majority of the team will run multiple races this weekend," said Director of Track and Field Cliff Rovelto. "We are still at a point where training loads are pretty demanding and we have the opportunity to use this weekend as a high load weekend as we do not have to travel. After this week, as we approach some very competitive competitions and get closer to the conference championship, we will be traveling which will decrease our loads. I'm sure we will see some quality performances this week despite the high loads."
Â
K-State will play host to five other schools for the meet inside Ahearn Field House which will include: Central Oklahoma, Northeastern Oklahoma State, Langston, Arkansas Pine-Bluff and Missouri State.
Â
The DeLoss Dodds Invitational returns to Ahearn Field House for the first time since 2018. K-State went head-to-head with Oklahoma State in the last meet and accumulated a total of 18 meet victories and five meet records back on February 3, 2018. Many of the upperclassmen for the Wildcats have experience with the home event, while the newcomers for the team will look to make their mark for the first time this weekend.
Â
In last week's victory at the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular, K-State delivered 12 wins en route to 254.5 points and a first-place finish, edging out Wichita State (221) and Kansas (191.5) in the meet. Newcomer Macy Heinz, who began competing at K-State just two weeks ago, recorded her second straight women's 800-meter victory with a time of 2:09.67. Her pace bumps her up the all-time indoor top-10 list for program history to No. 8.
Â
Senior Jullane Walker and sophomore Kassidy Johnson both achieved meet records during the triangular meet as Walker's time of 6.74 in the 60-meter dash became the fastest sprint in the history of the race while Johnson's win in the 1000-meter race with a pace of 2:47.39 earned herself a spot in the history books for the annual meet.
Â
Other K-State athletes who climbed into the school's all-time top-10 list included Johnson and sophomore Jessica Williams. Johnson's torrid pace during the 1000-meter event boosted her up to No. 3 all-time, while Williams pushed herself to No. 7 in program history after recording a mark of 3.65m/11-11.75 in the pole vault competition.
Â
Through four meets, the Wildcats have now earned 26 first-place finishes.
