Wildcats Complete Friday Portion of DeLoss Dodds Invitational
Jan 24, 2020 | Track & Field
MAHATTAN, Kan. – Mixing in pentathlon and heptathlon events while displaying other athletes throughout the day, the Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams finished day one of the DeLoss Dodds Invitational on Friday inside Ahearn Field House.
"I thought we had some very strong performances today," said Director of Track and Field Cliff Rovelto. "The 800's were very solid, and Travis (Hodge), Macy (Heinz) and Kassidy (Johnson) were outstanding. The 400's were also very good efforts. The weight and long jump also went well for those that competed tonight. The multi's went about as expected looking at totals. There were some very good individual marks and some that need to get better, but overall pretty indicative of where they are at in their preparation."
In a day filled with three different competition slates, the Wildcats saw five athletes place in the top four for the women's pentathlon and men's heptathlon in the first part of the DeLoss Dodds Invitational.
The freshman trio of Maddie Righter, Pippa Earley and Kindel Nordhus saw action in the women's pentathlon. Righter brought home a first-place finish in the high jump event, while Earley ran past the competition in the 800-meter race to take home top honors. Righter and Earley finished second (3,426 points) and third (3,418 points) in the pentathlon, respectively, while Nordhus ended in fourth place for the Wildcats with 3,167 points.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Safiya John won the women's pentathlon with a grand total of 3,689 points through the five-event platform.
The heptathlon featured sophomore Matas Adamonis and senior Kyle Parr, as both competed in three events. Going head-to-head with Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Frankly Stanislaus and Shevon Phipps, Adamonis ended the first day of the heptathlon leading the group with 2,143 points, while Parr followed just behind with 2,072 points, good for second place.
Adamonis clinched the men's shot-put victory with a throw of 13.79m/45-03.00 to give him the edge over Parr, who won the long jump event with a mark of 6.85m/22-05.75.
After a two-hour intermission, the invitational resumed with the weight throw competitions. Senior Helene Ingvaldsen led the way once again for the Wildcats as the Bergen, Norway native recorded a mark of 20.46m/67-01.50, paving the way for the win in the event. Junior Colin Echols took charge in the men's weight throw competition, notching a second-place finish with a throw of 19.35m/63-06.00.
In the women's pole vault, K-State sophomore Jessica Williams improved her personal best mark to 3.80m/12-05.50, earning the top spot while climbing the indoor record book to No. 6 all-time in program history.
Junior Macy Heinz followed suit in the women's 800-meter event, posting a time of 2:08.69 to boost herself to seventh all-time at K-State. This is the third-consecutive week Heinz has jumped up the leaderboard for the 800-meter race. Sophomore Kassidy Johnson finished just behind Heinz in the race, resulting in a second-place finish with a time of 2:08.75.
"She has stepped in and made an immediate impact for us," said assistant coach Ryun Godfrey on Heinz's performances the last few weeks. "I am very impressed with her work ethic and drive to get the most out of each day. Our team has been good for her, and she is certainly been good for us."
Continuing the 800-meter race over on the men's side, senior Travis Hodge posted the ninth-best time in school history with a pace of 1:50.81, which also gave him the victory on the evening.
Former Wildcat A'keyla Mitchell, who ran unattached during the 400-meter race, broke the DeLoss Dodds Invitational meet record with a scorching time of 53.17. The previous record was held by Nicole Green with time of 54.07 back in 1996.
Wrapping up the first day of the meet with the women's long jump event, three Wildcats jumped their way into the top spots with senior Ariel Okorie bringing home top honors with a leap of 6.01m/19-08.75. Sophomore Vitoria Alves and senior Lauren Taubert clinched spots alongside Okorie as Alves planted her mark in the sand with a 5.79m/19-00.00 jump to give her a runner-up finish. Taubert rounded out the top-three with a leap of 5.74m/18-10.00.
The Wildcats finish the DeLoss Dodds Invitational on Saturday in Ahearn Field House to complete the two-day event. Saturday's schedule begins with the second portion of the men's heptathlon at 9 a.m.
