K-State Baseball’s ALS Awareness Halloween Game Set for Oct. 30
Oct 22, 2020 | Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State baseball will hold its third-annual ALS Awareness Halloween Game on Friday, October 30 at 6:30 p.m. at Tointon Family Stadium, head coach Pete Hughes announced.
All fans are invited to attend this free, fun event intended to raise funds and bring awareness to the fight against ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Coaches and players will dress in costume for an entertaining and fun baseball game for the whole family.
Fans in attendance are also encouraged to dress in costume and are reminded that capacity at Tointon Family Stadium will be limited to 25 percent. County guidelines require all in attendance to wear face coverings and remain socially distant from other pods of fans.
The ALS Awareness Halloween Game began in 2012 while Hughes was the head coach at Virginia Tech, when Hughes' former player Pete Frates was diagnosed with ALS. Frates, who played for Hughes at Boston College, and his family spearheaded the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge which has helped raise over $220 million towards finding a cure.
"Pete told me the day he was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 27, that if Lou Gehrig's name was on the face of the disease, then his name was going to be on the cure," Hughes said. "Amazingly, this looks to be heading in that direction. He is an inspiration to myself, my family and every one of my players that have joined in the fight against ALS."
Frates was named team captain and graduated from BC in 2007 and was later diagnosed with ALS in March of 2012 at the age of 27. Sadly, Frates passed away on December 9, 2019 at the age of 34.
The ALS Awareness Halloween Game is a staple event of Hughes' 19 Ways campaign designed to impact the community in a positive way on 19 different occasions. The event followed Coach Hughes to the University of Oklahoma and the K-State baseball program is proud to continue the tradition with the K-State Family.
While the game is designed to bring a fun and exciting event for fans of all ages, it is driven by a fundraising spirit as proceeds raised will go to the ALS Association and Team Frate Train.

The Wildcats just concluded their annual Fall World Series, capped by the Shave for the Brave event in which players and coaches cut their hair in support of children's cancer research. The team raised more than $36,000 during the 2020 College Baseball Vs. Cancer Campaign.
The Cats have raised more money than any other college baseball program each of the last three years for Vs. Cancer, the signature fundraising campaign of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. K-State's fundraising total is over $90,000 in Hughes' three seasons.
With the ongoing construction on College Avenue near Tointon Family Stadium, fans are asked to park in the West Stadium lot near Gate 1 and use the pedestrian signal between Gates 1 and 3 to cross to the west side of College Avenue. Please follow the sidewalk south and cross back over at the signal near the ticket window at Tointon Family Stadium and enter through the main gates.
