K-State Completes Day One of OSU Fall Series Championship
Nov 06, 2020 | Tennis
STILLWATER, Okla. – The Kansas State women's tennis team clawed its way to four wins in the latter part of singles play to cap off day one of the OSU Fall Series Championship at the Greenwood Tennis Courts.
"We came out flat to start the day," said head coach Jordan Smith. "We definitely didn't possess the same swagger we've had in our other tournaments. That led to us being passive in doubles and in the first round of singles. We're never going to win in this league playing like that."
Freshman standout Manami Ukita put the 'Cats on the right track by earning a 6-3, 7-6 (1) victory over Kansas' Carmen Roxana Manu to advance to the quarterfinals round in the Flight Two bracket. Ukita was unable to continue her momentum, losing to Oklahoma State's Dariya Detkovskaya, 6-2, 6-0, to fall to 7-2 on the year.
Several Wildcats rebounded from losses in the first round to grab crucial victories in the consolation bracket of each singles' flight.
Junior Anna Turco exacted her revenge from a week ago on Iowa State's Ting-Pei Chang, as the Mondovi, Italy, product recorded a 6-2, 2-0, victory with Chang medically retiring during the match.
Junior Maria Linares bounced back from an early defeat to knock off Kaitlin Staines of Texas Tech, 6-4, 6-4.
The third victory came from junior Rosanna Maffei, who closed out TCU's Isabel Pascual Montalvo, 6-1, 6-0.
"We have to use our strengths and take control of the matches," Smith stated. "We were able to do this in the second round of singles. It does not erase the slow performances in the morning, but it does help with creating momentum for the next few days."
The early part of singles' competition included gutsy efforts from Linares and Maffei, who both attempted to overcome early deficits in their matches with Oklahoma State and Baylor opponents. Linares could not hold off the Cowgirls' Alana Wolfberg, as the Maracay, Venezuela, native posted a two-set defeat, 3-6, 6-7 (5). Maffei battled with Baylor's Alicia Herrero Linana, but fell in two sets, 5-7, 2-6.
Hoping to continue the streak for the Wildcats in the second round of singles play included junior Karine-Marion Job. Job could not turn the tides in her match with Chie Kezuka of Iowa State, however, and fell to the Cyclone. Before her match with Kezuka, Job lost in two sets to Baylor's Jessica Hinojosa, 5-7, 1-6
The last singles match of the evening featured junior Ioana Gheorghita. Gheorghita battled hard in the first set against the Cyclone but fell in straight sets, 5-7, 1-6.
Doubles' action included the duo of Ukita and Maffei holding their ground against the Jayhawks' Tiffany Lagarde and Vasiliki Karvouni in a set tiebreaker, which resulted in a 7-6 (4) victory in the consolation bracket. Ukita and Maffei opened the tournament with a loss to TCU's Marie Norris and Andy Guevara in the Round of 32.
In the other doubles' match of the day, Linares and Job slipped up in their set against Oklahoma State's Alana Wolfberg and Daniella Medvedeva.
"It was pretty simple," said Smith. "We have to move forward and take more ownership in our tennis. No more hoping and waiting for opponents to gift us matches."
K-State begins day two of the OSU Fall Series Championship at 10 a.m., CT, Saturday at the Greenwood Tennis Courts. The slate will kick off with another round of doubles' matches.
