Job, Linares Advance to Doubles Consolation Championship, as K-State Wraps Up Second Day at OSU Fall Series Championship

STILLWATER, Okla. – Juniors Maria Linares and Karine-Marion Job clinched a spot in the Doubles Consolation Finals, as the Kansas State women's tennis team wrapped up day two at the OSU Fall Series Championship at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
"Our attitude was better today," stated head coach Jordan Smith. "It was an improvement from yesterday for sure. For us, it comes down to being fully committed to our strategies."
Slipping up in their first doubles' set in the opening round of the tournament, the No. 1 pairing reinvented themselves on the court to capture two victories that powered them all the way to the final round of the doubles consolation bracket.
"Maria (Linares) and KJ (Karine-Marion Job) got back to playing and applying their style of aggressive tennis," said Smith. "They got away from playing passive back on the baseline and won the match at the net."
It was a superb outing for the duo, as both Wildcats locked in to save eight match points during their battle with Kansas' Julia Deming and Malkia Ngounoue, which resulted in a 7-5 set win in the first match of the day.
After skating by the Jayhawks' duo, Job and Linares caught fire and served their way to a 6-1 rout over Iowa State's Maty Cancini and Christen Hsieh.
Since the Fall 2019 campaign, both K-State players have racked up a 15-3 mark when paired together.
Job and Linares will now have their eyes set for the doubles' consolation title against Baylor's Jessica Hinojosa and Livia Kraus tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT, at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
"They'll be in great shape if this happens again tomorrow," Smith stated about the duo.
K-State came out with a sense of urgency in singles play, as Job, junior Rosanna Maffei and freshman Manami Ukita all posted efficient outings against conference foes. Finishing with an even record for the first part of singles' competition, both Maffei and Ukita posted victories over Texas Tech and Baylor opponents.
Maffei maneuvered well in her matchup with Texas Tech's Nell Miller and brought K-State its first individual win with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Ukita has not shied away from the competition thus far in her young career and proved yet again that she can take on anyone in her path, as the Saitama, Japan, product produced a 6-3, 6-4 win over Baylor's Jessica Hinojosa.
Maffei moved to 7-1 in singles play, while Ukita improved to 8-2 for the fall season.
K-State earned its final singles win from Job, as she recorded her first singles win at the OSU Fall Series Championship after posting a winless outing on day one. Battling Carmen Roxana Manu of Kansas, the Lyon, France, native dug deep and pulled out a two-set thriller with a score line of 6-4, 7-6 (6).
The rest of the consolation singles bracket featured the junior trio of Linares, Anna Turco and Ioana Gheorghita, who all played well but came up just short in their matches with TCU opponents.
Gheorghita could not find her stride in a pivotal third set with the Horned Frogs' Margaret Polk, as the Ploesti, Romania, native fell in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 8-10.
Turco could not rebound after a tough 5-7 first set defeat and eventually faltered in the second set to TCU's Stevie Kennedy at 4-6.
Riding high after scoring nice wins in doubles' play, Linares could not carry her momentum in singles' play, as she fell in two sets to Baylor's Mel Krywoj, 5-7, 3-6.
The duo Gheorghita and Turco got another chance to redeem themselves in doubles' action in the morning session against Baylor's Jessica Hinojosa and Livia Kraus but came up empty handed as the Bears took the set at 6-0.
"The message is always the same for our ladies, it is better to make your opponents adjust to your tempo and not the other way," said Smith. "We got better at that today and we should be primed to have a better outing on day three."
The Wildcats will finish out their fall season on Sunday at the OSU Fall Series Championship at the Greenwood Tennis Courts. Day three will kick off with doubles' action at 10 a.m. CT.
