Wildcats Sit in Seventh at Florida State Match-Up

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. -- Niamh McSherry and Briony Bayles sat just outside the top-20 and K-State women's golf was seventh after shooting 312-317--629 (+53) over the first 36 holes at the Florida State Match-Up on Bay Point Golf Club's Nicklaus Course Saturday. The Wildcats were one of five teams in a pack separated from fifth to eighth by just 14 strokes with a final round to play on Sunday.
McSherry was one of two Wildcats to improve her score from the opening round to the second and was tied for 21st after shooting 78-77-155 (+11) while Bayles was T24th after posting a 76-80--156 (+12). Bayles' first round 76 was K-State's best 18 hole score of the day. As a team, K-State tied for fourth in the field with 17 birdies and was one of three teams with an eagle - Bayles' final hole of round one - but struggled to avoid big numbers, resulting in a bottom half position.
"I saw too much fearful golf today," K-State head coach Kristi Knight said. "Some holes out there are visually intimidating, there's water, but we played tentative, fearful golf and I know we're capable of playing much better. We hit a lot of good shots today, there were just stretches where we hit a poor shot and then just really compounded our problems."
No. 13 LSU (+16) shot an opening round 289 while opening up an 11 stroke lead on host-school and 24th-ranked Florida State (+27) - two of a quartet of top-40 teams at the top. LSU's Ingrid Lindblad, ranked No. 2 in the country, shot 71-72--143 (-1) and was the only player under par while leading for medalist honors after the first day.
K-State was among the tournament leaders through the early holes, spurred by Chloe Weir's round-opening birdie and another by McSherry on her second hole, but by the 'Cats slipped down the leaderboard and into the middle of the field after the turn. Weir and Reid Isaac both shot 19-over 163 and were tied for 43rd, while Heather Fortushniak contributed a pair of rounds to the team score while shooting 77-81--158 (+14) and was T32nd.
"This is not a game of perfect," Knight said. "There were glimpses, even in the midst of all the not great things going on, there were glimpses of what they're capable of if they choose to go out and make birdies and be more confident."
K-State was paired with Toledo for the entirety of the first day, but will tee off Sunday with Memphis and Missouri from hole 12 starting at 8 a.m. local time.
