Taubert Earns Big 12 Athlete of the Week Honors
Feb 05, 2020 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Posting the fourth-best pentathlon score in school history last weekend at the Razorback Invitational, senior Lauren Taubert was tabbed as the Big 12 Women's Athlete of the Week, the conference announced today.
"Staying focused on one event at a time and paying attention to the small technical things in each event along with focusing on myself and not the competition really had an impact on how I performed," Taubert said last week after obtaining the win.
Taubert, a Casper, Wyoming native, recorded 4,352 points en route to the pentathlon victory against some of the country's best programs inside Randal Tyson Track Center. The senior needed back-to-back runner-up finishes in the long jump and 800-meter events in order to hold off the field to secure the top spot on the leader board. Her point total ranks No. 6 on the top-10 list for the meet's history with her win last weekend.
"Lauren obviously had a great meet," said Director of Track and Field Cliff Rovelto. "It was a 200-point PR. She had PR's in the first four events and then ran nearly a PR in the 800. She only ran faster at the indoor nationals last year. She has worked hard over the past three and a half years and does everything asked of her."
Nationally, Taubert now sits in first place for pentathlon scores in the NCAA standings, leading by more than 100 points to the next opponent.
This is familiar territory for Taubert as she has now earned her second Big 12 Athlete of the Week award for the indoor season. Her first honor during the indoor campaign came back nearly two years ago on February 7, 2018.
K-State has now notched three Big 12 Athlete of the Week awards in the 2020 indoor season with senior Jullane Walker and sophomore Kassidy Johnson earning their own accolades back on January 15.
K-State heads east for the next meet in the 2020 indoor campaign as both the men's and women's teams prepare to compete in the South Carolina Invitational on Friday, February 7 through Saturday, February 8 in Columbia, S.C.
