MANHATTAN, Kansas – The Kansas State men's golf team returns to South Carolina on Monday, March 9th to compete in the General Hackler Championship, held at the par-72, 7,233-yard Dunes Beach Golf Club in Myrtle Beach.
"It's a great opportunity for us this week at the Hackler," head coach Grant Robbins. "Outside of the Big 12 Championship, this will be one of the strongest fields we will play against all year."
The Wildcats are coming off a fifth-place finish at last week's Colleton River Collegiate, where senior Jacob Eklund tallied a second-place finish, his best of the year and tied for the best finish in his career. They'll face a stiff challenge, and prime opportunity to continue rising through the rankings, up the Atlantic Coast with 10 of the 15 teams ranked among Golfstat's Top-60.
"The guys are playing well, we just have to make sure we keep the mindset of playing the course and being committed and focused one shot at a time," Robbins said. "For us it's all about taking care of the little things, controlling what we can control and just continuing our climb."
K-State will switch its lineup a bit compared to last week. Eklund and fellow senior Ben Fernandez are in the top two positions, followed by sophomore Will Hopkins, who moves into the third spot following his first top-20 finish of the season. Kyle Vance, a junior who has competed as an individual the past two tournaments, finds himself back in the scoring lineup in the fourth slot, while freshman Tim Tillmanns makes his spring debut for K-State after participating in the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate back in October. Redshirt freshman Ryan Bender, a native of Overland Park, Kansas, will make his K-State debut and compete as an individual.
Joining K-State in Myrtle Beach will be tournament host Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, (25)ETSU, Kent State, (35)Liberty, (14)Louisville, (26)North Carolina, NC State, (46)North Florida, Penn State, (39)South Carolina, UNC Greensboro, Wisconsin and (7)Wake Forest.
