K-State Wraps Up Sac State Duel on Sunday with Two Victories on the Water

Mar 08, 2020 | Rowing

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In its first official head-to-head matchup of the spring campaign, the Kansas State women's rowing team recorded two victories to finish out the Sac State Duel against Sacramento State on Sunday.

"First off, we want to thank Sac State Rowing for hosting what turned out to be a great initial event for us," said head coach Pat Sweeney. "The races were competitive, and all crews have clear objectives for the upcoming camp."

With the competition only taking place for one day, the Wildcats made their mark at Lake Natoma once again as the team earned two victories while posting impressive marks in the other races.

Kicking off the race with the 2v8+, coxswain Lauren Plum, rowers Marisa Rodriguez, Madison Rebel, Rachel Haskell, Megan Kelly, Ashley Cass, Patricia Hokanson, Elizabeth Sloan and Aubrey Gilchrist finished out a tight contest to take second with a time of 6:55.93.

"The 2v8 battled to the finish line in a tight race," said Sweeney. "Phenomenal first-race experience for the first-year racers in that boat. They learned that with only two outings in that line up, they are competitive. The tight race and photo finish loss will set the stage for some focused speed development over the upcoming week. They can be competitive in this event, but they will have to work hard to gain the speed they need to finish first. I'm pleased to see the athletes in that boat come together so quickly. They have only been in that line up for one day."

The Wildcats turned their attention to the 1v8+ race consisting of coxswain Emily Johnson, Natasha Johnson, Caroline Geither, Madison Jensen, Megan Michaelis, Mattie Warner, Taylor Hartman, Maya Morrow and Mikaela Bennett. K-State's 1v8+ recorded another second-place finish at 6:55.47.

"The 1v8 put together a solid starting place," said Sweeney. With a bit more water time, I think they should be able to execute a competitive race plan."

At the midway mark for the Sac State Duel, K-State posted its first victory of the day in the 3v8+ race as coxswain Kylee Stec and rowers Jessica Gillilan, Jadyn Greisen, Ellie Hahn, Lisa Zuiderveen, Lauren Walker, Idallis Shaffer, Kate Odgers and Tessa Davids defeated the Hornets boat by a wide margin with a time of 7:06.74.

Nearing the end of the day, the Wildcats pushed themselves to a stellar victory in the 1v4+. Coming down to the final stretch, coxswain Kaitlyn Henke and rowers Logan Frost, Abigail Dressler, Elizabeth Mummert and Megan Chrisco stayed the course and won the race at 7:36.4.

"Nice wins today in the 3v8 and 1v4," said Sweeney. "The 3v8 line up is made up of five novices, so there was a lot learned and great experience gained. The 1v4 put together a composed, clean race which is what I would expect of that crew."

The 2v4+ finished third in the varsity 4's event. With a lineup of coxswain Kelsey Ladlie, Jessica Schenk, Cathy Leavitt, Kaylee Kleinschmidt and Allison Pringle, the crew clocked a finish time of 8:21.6 to close out the duel.

"The 2v4 is a young crew and with time, they will be competitive in their event," stated Sweeney.

Finishing up the regatta with the Hornets, K-State will remain at Lake Natoma for the remainder of the week as the team begins spring camp. The team will look to keep enhancing their skills as the bulk of the 2020 schedule will start in April.

"The camp will offer the water time and mileage we need to develop the different parts of the race," said Sweeney. "The fitness is in place. Now we focus on technique and fundamental, good rowing."

After the completion of spring camp, K-State will return home for a few weeks before traveling down south to participate in the Sunshine Invitational on Saturday, April 3 in Sarasota, Florida.
