(24/rv) K-State Overcomes Deficit to Win at TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas – Trailing by 13 points on Saturday afternoon, Kansas State rallied to down TCU at Schollmaier Arena for a 68-65 win. The win ended a three-game skid at TCU and matches K-State win total from last season.
K-State (19-8, 9-6 Big 12) saw three players reach double figures led by senior Kindred Wesemann with 19 points. Wesemann scored a school record 12 points in the fourth quarter. She also pocketed a career-high six steals.
Joining Wesemann in double figures was junior Kaylee Page with 15 points and senior Breanna Lewis with 10 points. Page registered nine points in the third quarter to aid the second half comeback.
TCU (12-14, 4-11) was led by Amy Okonkwo with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
For the afternoon, Kansas State shot 40.7 percent (24-of-59) from the floor including a 9-of-22 performance from beyond the arc. TCU shot 41.2 percent (21-of-51) but K-State held the Horned Frogs to a 28.0 percent second half effort. K-State forced TCU into 17 turnovers including 10 in the second half.
TCU dashed out to an 11-point lead, 17-6, with 3:13 remaining in the first quarter. The Horned Frogs buried three 3-point field goals to highlight the early run. K-State answered with a 5-0 burst to pull within 17-11 with 2:28 left. The Horned Frogs would lead 23-14 at the end of the frame, as they outscored the Wildcats 10-8 in the paint.
K-State pulled to within six points, 26-20, with 7:03 left in the second quarter. Shaelyn Martin buried a 3-pointer and Breanna Lewis converted a hook shot to bring the deficit to six. TCU would rebuild its lead to double figures over the course of the second quarter, as Amber Ramirez would seven straight points. Amy Okonkwo followed with four points of her own to increase the lead to 13, 42-29, with 2:21 left in the second quarter.
The Wildcats cut the deficit to eight at the break, 42-34, as Karyla Middlebrook notched three points while Lewis added a layup in a 5-0 run over the final minute and a half..
K-State shot 48.1 percent (13-of-27) in the opening half, but TCU was a blistering 53.8 percent (14-of-26). The Horned Frogs boosted their lead with a 10-of-15 effort at the free throw line, while K-State was just 4-of-9.
Despite shooting 21.1 percent in the third quarter, Kansas State outscored TCU 15-10 in the third quarter to pull to within three, 52-49. Kaylee Page was red hot at the end of the third frame, scoring K-State final nine points including a pair of 3-pointers.
TCU was able to keep K-State at arm's length for the early part of the fourth quarter, building a five-point lead with 4:29 left. K-State closed to within two, 63-61, with 3:16 left as Lewis finished a layup and Wesemann knocked down her second 3-pointer of the quarter.
K-State took its first lead of the game, 64-63, with 1:55 left in the fourth quarter as Wesemann buried consecutive 3-pointers. After a pair of TCU free throws, Wesemann pocketed a steal and fast break layup to push the Wildcats back in front, 66-65, with 1:08 remaining. A free throw from Wesemann and Middlebrook provided the final margin.
Kansas State has a quick turnaround, as the Wildcats host (19/19) Oklahoma on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to take part in the "Tipoff for TP," as the K-State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be accepting donations of toilet paper, paper towels and garbage bags to benefit the Manhattan Emergency Shelter.
Tuesday night's game will be broadcast on FCS Central and K-StateHD.TV, as well as on the K-State Sports Network.
