K-State Upset Bid Falls Shot at (12/13) Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – Kansas State went on scoring runs to start all four quarters on Saturday at the Erwin Center, but (12/13) Texas fended off each run to win its 16th straight game, 63-58.
Kansas State (17-7, 7-5 Big 12) was led by the senior tandem of Kindred Wesemann and Breanna Lewis with 21 points and 14, respectively. Junior guard Karyla Middlebrook chipped in with 12 points.
Texas (18-4, 12-0) was paced by freshman Joyner Holmes with 21 points and nine rebounds. Junior Brooke McCarty notched 11 points, while Kelsey Lang added 10 points, nine rebounds and five blocks.
K-State shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56) from the field, while Texas converted at a 43.3 percent (26-of-60) clip. The Longhorns out-rebounded K-State, 37-34. The Wildcats were forced into 21 turnovers, which resulted in a 19-14 edge for Texas in points off turnovers.
K-State opened with a 6-0 burst to force a Texas timeout two minutes into the game. Breanna Lewis and Kindred Wesemann converted three layups to force the early break.
Texas answered the K-State opening salvo with an 8-0 run to secure an 8-6 lead with 6:32 left. The Longhorns would end the frame with a 20-16 lead. Karyla Middlebrook kept K-State within four with by scoring five points at the end of the quarter.
For the second straight quarter, K-State jump out with a quick 6-0 run to capture a 22-20 lead with 7:25 left in the first half. Lewis started the quarter with a pair of layups, while Wesemann added a midrange jumper. Texas answered with five quick points to secure a 25-22 lead with 6:46 remaining.
The five points by Texas were the last field goals the Longhorns would get for the final 6:45 of the second quarter. K-State's defense held Texas to a 14.3 percent shooting effort in the quarter and pull to within one at the half, 27-26. K-State was paced by Lewis and Wesemann with 21 of the 26 points.
For the third straight quarter, K-State zipped out to an early run. The Wildcats strung together an 8-0 advantage to build its largest lead of the afternoon, 34-27, with 8:23 left in the third. Middlebrook started with a jumper followed by Shaelyn Martin finishing a backdoor cut with a layup. After a technical foul on Texas's McCarty, Wesemann buried a pair of free throws, then Lewis added a hook shot.
The Longhorns answered with a 16-2 run over a six-minute span to secure a 43-36 lead with 1:53 left in the third quarter. Holmes was a factor during the rally, scoring eight points.
Kansas State methodically climbed back into the game during the fourth quarter. Wesemann helped the Wildcats rally into a tie three times with under five minutes to play. She converted a three-point play on a layup and free throw, then knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:54 left to even the game at 57.
Texas was pushed in front by Holmes with a pair of layups to build the lead to 61-57 with a minute remaining. K-State would only make a free throw in the final minute as the Longhorns held off the upset bid.
Kansas State returns to Bramlage Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 11, to host Iowa State at 1 p.m. Saturday's game is K-State's annual Pack the House game, as all tickets and select concession items are available for $1.
