K-State Set to Return to Action at Colonial Collegiate Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following a shortened spring season and a summer of uncertainties, K-State will return to action at the Big 12 exclusive Colonial Collegiate Invitational on September 28-29, at the Par 70, 7,204-yard Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Colonial Country Club, which hosted the Charles Schwab Classic back in June, will now host the first of two events in the Big 12's Fall Series, with results of this week's event determining seeding in the Big 12 Match Play Tournament (Oct. 2-4). Half of the field is ranked in the NCAA Division I Top 25, while eight players are ranked in the top 40 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings. It's a challenge that the Wildcats are looking forward to.
"We're always kind of looked at like underdogs in the Big 12," graduate student Jacob Eklund said. "The Big 12 is considered the best golf conference, so to be able to go up against around eight top 50 teams, it's really good for us. It's going to prepare us for our spring and to be able to play at Colonial, that's what college is about is preparation. To be able to go there and play a PGA course against a great field makes it exciting."
The Colonial Collegiate will consist of 54-holes of stroke play, and the four lowest scores of each round out of the six players competing for the Wildcats will count. Teams will play as two groups of three-somes from the same squad to minimize contact. Play begins Monday with 36 holes, followed by a final 18 holes on Tuesday.
Eklund will lead the Wildcats after gaining an extra year of eligibility last spring. The Carbondale, Illinois, led the team a year ago with a pair of top-10 finishes, including a runner-up finish at the Colleton River Collegiate. Senior George Clarke, junior Will Hopkins, and sophomore Tim Tillmanns, who all made appearances in the scoring lineup last season, will join Eklund in the lineup. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Bender and freshman Luke O'Neill will be making their K-State scoring lineup debuts.
"In the short time we've had, we've been working really hard," Hopkins said of the team. "In the bubble we are in at the moment, we've been able to get to know each other. It feels like a family, like it always is here, and that's helped us in trying to achieve our goal moving forward. I'm excited, we have a lot of talent with the new guys and Jake returning, and it's exciting to see what we can all do."
