K-State Closes Day Two of Big 12/PAC-12 Dual with Five Singles Wins
Jan 12, 2021 | Tennis
ARLINGTON, Texas – The Kansas State women's tennis team showcased another wave of dominance for singles play and it carried over for the second segment of the Big 12/PAC-12 Dual, as the group followed up yesterday's outing inside the Arlington Tennis Center with five singles' wins on Tuesday (January 12) afternoon.
"Once again we had a complete team effort in all of our singles matches today," said head coach Jordan Smith. "We picked up five wins and played tough in the other three. It was all in the mindset. Nothing needed to change from yesterday since they did a great job. Today was all about building on our fundamentals and continuing to be aggressive."
K-State played most of its singles matches against the Kansas Jayhawks on Tuesday, who have now seen the Wildcats three times thus far in 2020-21. Singles play started off on a high note with performances from junior Rosanna Maffei and senior Lilla Barzo, as they both scooped up their second victories of the week with wins over the Jayhawks.
Maffei needed three sets to clinch her victory over Kansas' Tiffany Lagarde, as she set the tone early on in singles play for K-State with a score line of 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. Barzo had a quick match with the Jayhawk's Julia Deming and won by default at a score of 5-1.
Freshman Manami Ukita got back on track in singles play and tallied another win for the Wildcats with a 7-6 (3), 6-3, victory over Kansas' Sonia Smagina. The win gave Ukita her 10th victory of the year for individual competitions.
Juniors Anna Turco and Ioana Gheorghita competed against Utah opponents and left both of their matchups in the dust, as Turco powered through the Utes' Madison McKay in two sets, 6-1, 6-1, while Gheorghita turned in an unblemished victory against Utah's Emily Dush with a 6-0, 6-0, sweep.
The Wildcats opened day two of the Big 12/PAC-12 Dual with another solid start in doubles' play, as the team secured two wins against Texas Tech pairings. Junior tandem Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares were automatic in their 6-1 victory over the Red Raiders' Metka Komac and Olivia Peet. Job and Linares have now improved to 11-2 for the 2020-21 season when paired together.
Even with the lack of playing time together, Ukita and Gheorghita have found success in just their second outing, as both players took down Texas Tech's Bojana Marinkov and Utah's Madison McKay at 6-3 to score their second win in as many days.
For the rest of the Wildcats in singles play, it was tough day for those who came up short, with Linares, Job, and senior Margot Decker eventually dropping each of their matches on Tuesday afternoon after fighting through adversity from the beginning of their showdowns with Kansas opponents.
Tying up her match with win in the second set, Job sputtered out in her final set with the Jayhawks' Malkia Ngounoue, which ended her day with a score line of 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (5). Both Linares and Decker fell in two sets to the Jayhawks' Carmen Roxana Manu and Vasiliki Karvouni.
With day two running its course for the Big 12/PAC-12 Dual, K-State has now registered 13 combined victories between singles and doubles play.
K-State will stay put for one more night in Arlington, Texas, for the final day of the Big 12/PAC-12 Dual on Wednesday, January 13.
"We have to finish strong tomorrow," stated Smith. "No need to end the trip on a sour note. These ladies are playing great and just have to find that final push to close out day three."
