Oct 02, 2021 | Men's Golf
SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – Led by Tim Tillmanns in a tie for third place, the Kansas State men's golf team got the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate started Saturday morning with a 2-over par 290 in round one to be in a tie for eighth place.
"I thought we played pretty well on the front nine today, however we gave away quite a few shots on the back," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The greens here are really firm, and if you aren't precise on your approaches, it makes it tough to score."
Tillmanns provided the performance that the Wildcats needed Saturday as he carded a 4-under par 68 over the first 18. The junior has been solid all season for K-State, but he will be battling for his first top-five finish of the year as he is just one stroke away from the lead.
The next Cat on the 80-man individual leaderboard and in a tie for 36th is Luke O'Neill after scoring a 1-over par 73 opening round.
True freshman Nicklaus Mason carded a 2-over par 74 in the first round to be in a tie for 46th place. Will Hopkins, the lone senior for K-State, is in a tie for 59th place as he recorded a 3-over par 75 Saturday morning.
Cooper Schultz, who is coming off the first top-10 finish to his career, didn't have the start he envisioned. Schultz carded a 4-over par 76 and is tied for 76th place.
Competing as an individual, Ethan Miller sits in a tie for 71st place. The Round Rock, Texas native recorded a 5-over par 77 score.
The stacked 12-team field is so far led by host school Northern Illinois with a 9-under par 279 first round. Two Huskies sit atop the individual leaderboard in Tommy Dunsire and Ben Sluzaas who scored a 5-under par 67.
Luckily for the Wildcats, there is a lot of golf to play at the par-72, 7,281-yard Rich Harvest Farms, and there will be tons of opportunities to move up in a tight leaderboard.
"There are a lot of holes left, and we are still within striking distance," Robbins said. "We just need to clean up some of those little mistakes and be a little sharper the next couple days and we will be in good shape."
Play will resume tomorrow morning as Kansas State will tee off round two on hole No. 1 beginning at 10:10 a.m. on Sunday. The Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate will conclude Monday morning with a shotgun start to the final round beginning at 9:30 a.m. Fans can follow live scoring at Golfstat.com.
