Oct 22, 2021 | Tennis
IOWA CITY, Iowa – A cold day in Iowa City on day two of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regional was no match for the Kansas State women's tennis team on Friday (October 22) at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center.
"Today was a good day," stated head coach Jordan Smith. "We had some close matches, and some doubles pairs advance to a round of 16 and so it was a successful day. It was great having all eight of our players in the singles main draw and have nine singles wins. The success we have been having puts us in a great position and the competition is only going to get more intense as we go on."
Coming off a doubles win against Bradley yesterday, freshman Dinara Alloyarova and sophomore Manami Ukita were victorious against Rachel Hanford and Ekin Ercetin from Minnesota 8-5.
Also earning a doubles win for K-State was freshman Florentine Dekkers and senior Ioana Gheorghita. The pair took down No. 24 Oklahoma's Marcelina Podlinska and Emma Staker 8-3.
Seniors Rosanna Maffei and Anna Turco had a hard-fought battle against No. 41 Iowa's Samantha Gillas and Samantha Mannix, but unfortunately fell 8-7(5).
In their double's matchup, seniors Maria Linares and Karine-Marion Job were defeated by No. 48 Tulsa's Valeryia Rozenkova and Maria Berlanga Bandera 8-7(4).
In singles play, Linares defeated Tiffini Nash from Missouri State in two sets 6-3, 6-0.
Maffei won in the singles main draw second round against Nebraska's Maja Makoric 6-1, 6-2.
After having a bye in the first round, Job overpowered Tulsa's Bandera 6-3, 7-6(5).
Turco was victorious against Arizona State's Hunter Roper in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, but fell to Isabel Adrover Gallego from Nebraska in the second round of match play 6-1, 7-5.
Winning her first ITA Central Regional match 6-1, 6-2 was Dekkers. The win didn't last long as she was defeated by Emilee Duong from Minnesota 6-3, 6-4.
Oral Roberts' Oleksandra Nahurska was too much for Ghoerghita and the Romania native dropped her match 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4. She ended up playing Jessie Zheng from Wichita State in the main draw consolation bracket and came out victorious 6-0, 4-6 (10-7).
In the first round of singles play, Ukita came out with a win against Kansas City's Grace Ball 6-2, 6-2. Ukita followed up with her third victory of the day after winning the second-round singles match against Oklahoma State's Sofia Rojas 6-3, 6-4.
