Job Moves to Semifinals of Singles Main Draw on Day Four
Oct 24, 2021 | Tennis
IOWA CITY, Iowa – As competition heats up at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regional at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex on Sunday (October 24), the Kansas State women's tennis team marches on to the semifinals in the singles main draw.
"Being able to compete this late in the competition is great for this team," stated head coach Jordan Smith. "It is great seeing KJ continue the momentum from the SMU Red and Blue Challenge and defeating a ranked opponent. Going into the semifinals after four days of competing, it is ultimately going to come down to who wants it more."
Advancing out of the quarterfinals was senior Karine-Marion Job. The Lyon, France native was victorious against No. 38 Indianna Spink from Arkansas in three-sets 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In the semifinals of the main draw consolation bracket, senior Ioana Gheorghita defeated Elys Ventura from Mizzou 4-6, 6-3 (10-6). Gheorghita moved onto finals to take on Myroslava Zelenchuk from SEMO. After two-sets, Gheorghita dropped to Zelenchuk 6-2, 0-6 (10-8), earning the runner-up title.
"Seeing Ioana come back and making it to the finals of the consolation draw means a lot," said Smith. "She worked hard and it shows."
Freshman Dinara Alloyarova and sophomore Manami Ukita took on Christin Hsieh and Thasaporn Naklo from Iowa State, but fell to the pair 6-2, 6-3.
The Wildcats will send Job to the semifinals of the main draw bracket on Monday (October 25) where she will take on Maria Titova from Kansas in Iowa City, Iowa.
