Nov 17, 2021 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State earned eight total selections to the 2021 Academic All-Big 12 Teams with seven earning first-team honors, including a 4.0 grade-point average from Mackenzie Morris, as the conference office announced its annual Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Teams Wednesday.
Morris, who is a sophomore majoring in business administration, was one of 12 student-athletes in the conference to boast a 4.0 grade-point average. The honor marked the first Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection for the libero.
Joining Morris with first-team academic recognition were Teana Adams-Kaonohi, Holly Bonde, Aliyah Carter, Kadye Fernholz, Loren Hinkle and Jacque Smith. Kayley Hollywood claimed second-team honors, the first of her career.
Smith earned the fourth first-team nod in her career while Adams-Kaonohi, Bonde and Hinkle were each selected for the second time in their respective careers. Carter and Fernholz made their way onto the Academic All-Big 12 First Team for the first time.
Smith is the first Wildcat to collect four Academic All-Big 12 First Team awards since Katie Brand (2013-16).
K-State has had at least seven first-team honorees in each of the last six seasons. Since 2015, 62 Wildcats have received Academic All-Big 12 accolades with 56 being named to the first team.
First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. A total of 85 student-athletes were honored as Academic All-Big 12, with 75 first-team selections and 10 members of the second team.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
K-State (15-8, 6-6 Big 12) takes on No. 2 Texas on Thursday and Friday in its final road series of the season. Both contests will air on the Longhorn Network and the ESPN app, with radio coverage available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM).
