MANHATTAN, Kan. – As part of K-State baseball's 19 Ways, head coach Pete Hughes and the Wildcats have partnered with Katie's Way and No Stone Unturned Foundation for this year's annual Fall World Series at Tointon Family Stadium.
The two non-profit organizations will be featured as the team names for the program's three-game intrasquad series, which begins Friday at 6 p.m. at Tointon Family Stadium. Traditionally Team Purple vs. Team Grey, Team Katie's Way will take the place of Team Purple while Team Grey will become Team No Stone Unturned.
"It is a privilege to have our guys represent Katie's Way and No Stone Unturned," said Hughes, entering his fourth season as the Wildcats head coach. "These two organizations are pillars in the Manhattan community. Their work is selfless and vitally important. Both are great representations of who we are as a community, department and program."
"Katie's Way is honored and excited to be a part of the Fall World Series and to be a part of K-State baseball's 19 Ways community service initiatives," said Katie's Way Clinical Director Matt Wassom. "Our entire staff is extremely appreciative of K-State baseball's efforts in raising awareness in mental healthcare in our community and for supporting our mission to serve the community. I think it is fantastic that all the individuals in this program are so giving and it makes me proud to be a K-State alumnus and Wildcat fan in this great community."
"The 19 Ways community service program that Coach Hughes and the Bat Cats are committed to is a shining example of the good being done by K-State Athletics in our community," said Kelly Keogh, No Stone Unturned Foundation's executive director. "No Stone Unturned is so grateful to be a recipient of their generosity and our family is very excited to be a part of the Fall World Series."
Katie's Way provides services that promote social-emotional development, prevent development of mental health challenges and address social-emotional problems that currently exist through evidence-based and innovate therapy programs. No Stone Unturned Foundation is dedicated to embracing, engaging and empowering children with special needs and their families. The teams, which were drafted by team captains and are listed below, will continue the series Saturday at 4 p.m. before concluding the weekend Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday's Fall World Series finale will precede this year's Shave for the Brave, another staple event in Hughes' 19 Ways initiative.
Shave for the Brave culminates the fall portion of the Cats' fall schedule as well as the team's College Baseball Vs. Cancer fundraising campaign. Players, coaches and staff, who have been raising money throughout the fall, will cut their hair in support of children's cancer research and raise funds to benefit Vs. Cancer, the signature fundraising campaign of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.
"Our association with Vs. Cancer and our fundraising efforts are always highlights of our school year," Hughes added. "Our players are beyond amazing in raising money for those kids who are fighting to be healthy again. It's an honor to coach men who understand the bigger picture and the privilege of being healthy and a K-State baseball player."
As of Wednesday, K-State student-athletes, coaches and staff have combined to raise over $28,000 in this year's College Baseball Vs. Cancer campaign, which is the second-highest total in the nation. The Wildcats have a goal to reach $40,000 in this year's campaign, as they seek their fourth consecutive national fundraising title.
Hughes' Cats have raised over $93,000 over the last three years to benefit the non-profit organization. Last season's fundraising drive saw K-State players and staff raise more than $38,000 – nearly $10,000 more than any other collegiate baseball program – in claiming their third straight fundraising title.
