
Big Wins Help Wildcats Advance at Big 12 Fall Championship

STILLWATER, Okla. – The Kansas State women's tennis program had some big wins on Friday (November 5) at the Big 12 Fall Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
"We had great energy today," stated assistant coach Trang Huynh-McClain. "I'm proud of how we competed on every single court and we still have many matches to play this weekend. I look forward for us to keep the same mentality and putting ourselves in the most competitive positions."
After a first round bye, freshman Florentine Dekkers and senior Maria Linares moves to the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw bracket. The duo defeated Malkia Ngounoue and Carmen Roxana Manu from Kansas, 8-3.
Senior Anna Turco and sophomore Manami Ukita took down Baylor's Olivia Malm and Brooke Thompson, 8-4, to move on in bracket play. Following the victory, the pair was up against the No. 4 seed duo of Alexandra Pisareva and Layne Sleeth from Oklahoma. The ranked doubles team was too much for Ukita and Turco as they fell 8-6.
After falling 8-4 to Oklahoma State's Dariya Detkovskaya and Oona Orpana, seniors Rosanna Maffei and Ioana Gheorghita will move to the consolation bracket for doubles play.
In the singles main draw, No. 4 seeded Dekkers earned a first round bye and defeated Big 12 rival Baylor's Olivia Malm in two-sets, 6-4, 7-6(3). The Netherlands native will advance to the semifinals and play on Saturday (November 6) against the No. 1 seed Cristina Tiglea from Texas Tech.
Ukita had the upset of the day as she was victorious against No. 1 seeded Marcelina Podlinska from Oklahoma, 6-3, 6-3. The victory was short lived as the sophomore dropped to Bojana Marinkov from Texas Tech, 6-3, 6-4.
Taking on the No. 3 seed and preseason ranked No. 68 Malkia Ngounoue from Kansas, Maffei walked away with a 3-6, 6-4(10-7) win in the first round of Flight A. In the quarterfinals, Maffei won 6-4, 6-4 against Kailey Evans from Texas Tech, making her way into the semifinals.
The battle was tough, but Gheorghita succumbed to Sofia Rojas from Oklahoma State after two-sets, 6-1, 6-3. Gheorghita's day wasn't over as she moved into the semifinals of the consolation bracket after an injury by Momoko Nagato from West Virginia.
Linares was forced to retire in the second set of her match with Oklahoma State's Mananchaya Sawangkaew.
K-State will continue competition on Saturday (November 6) in Stillwater, Oklahoma at 10 a.m., CT.
