Semifinals Victory Moves Maffei to Singles Draw Finals

STILLWATER, Okla. – Matches continued on day two of competition in Stillwater, Oklahoma at the Big 12 Fall Championships on Saturday (November 6).
"Today we showed up a little flat on some courts then slowly finding our way in the match," stated assistant coach Trang Huynh-McClain. "That makes it tough having to fight from behind, so we need to find our rhythm and energy starting from the beginning tomorrow."
Senior Rosanna Maffei earned a 7-6(4), 6-2 victory against Mananchaya Sawangkaew from Big 12 rival Oklahoma State in the semifinals of the Flight A Main Draw. Maffei will play in the finals against Baylor's Alina Shcherbinina on Sunday (November 7).
"Rosy did a great job at fighting and closing out matches in the past two days," said Huynh-McClain. "It shows that she is one of the top players in the Big 12. The team has been improving throughout the fall tournament schedule at competing and showing grit in every match. We just need to keep working and create good habits to prepare for the spring."
In the semifinals of Flight C, No. 4 seeded and freshman Florentine Dekkers dropped to the No. 1 seed Texas Tech's Cristina Tiglea 6-0, 6-2.
It was a tough battle in Flight B's consolation semifinals, but ultimately senior Ioana Gheorghita was defeated by Metka Komac from Texas Tech in two-sets 7-5, 7-5.
Due to an injury obtained on Friday (November 5), Dekkers and senior Maria Linares had to withdraw from the doubles quarterfinals.
Day three will begin on Sunday (November 7) at 9 a.m. CT in Stillwater Oklahoma. First up will be the doubles final followed by the singles final at 10 a.m. CT.
