Three Wildcats Finish Under Par as K-State Places Seventh
Feb 16, 2021 | Men's Golf
MOBILE, Ala. – Battling frigid and windy conditions, the K-State Men's Golf team fell one spot during Tuesday's final round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, held at the par-72, 7,212-yard Magnolia Grove Crossing Golf Course.
The Wildcats, who finished seventh out of 15 teams, completed the tournament at 3-under par 861, K-State's lowest 54-hole team score since the 2019 Big 12 Championship (847).
Junior Will Hopkins shot his third consecutive under-par round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 71. He tallied a career-best finish in a tie for ninth as the Lincolnshire, England product carded a 5-under par 211, the lowest 54-hole score by a Wildcat since Jacob Eklund last March at the Colleton River Collegiate.
Senior George Clarke tallied his second top-20 finish of the season after shooting a career best 4-under par 212 thanks to a 2-under par 70 on Tuesday. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Bender, who competed as an individual, also finished the tournament under par, tying for 21st at 1-under par 215, the best 54-hole score of his career. He capped his tournament with a 1-under par 71 on Tuesday.
"There were a lot of positives this week," head coach Grant Robbins said. "Will, George, and Ryan all had career best finishes, and I thought everyone did a good job staying in the process and bouncing back after mistakes. As a team, we made 51 birdies and an eagle, so the potential is there. We just weren't sharp enough on and around the greens. We have to hit it closer and do a better job of converting up and downs when we miss a green. There is definitely a lot we can build on going forward."
Sophomore Riccardo Leo finished at 3-over par 219, putting him in a tie for 39th, and freshman Luke O'Neill finished two strokes behind Leo at 5-over par 221 to tie for 47th. Eklund tied for 67th with a three-round score of 12-over par 228.
Illinois won the 2021 Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, as the Illini shot 37-under par 827, 17 strokes ahead of the rest of the field. Three Illini finished in the top five, led by Michael Feagles, who stayed on top of the leaderboard all tournament with a winning score of 16-under par 200.
K-State returns to Georgia for a second time this spring, March 8-9, at the Spartan Collegiate in Sea Island, Georgia.
