Cats Humbled by Bulldogs Saturday, 17-5
Feb 20, 2021 | Baseball
K-State (1-1) erased a four-run deficit with a four-run third inning, only to see the Bulldogs (2-0) score eight unanswered runs over the next three frames. Gonzaga put across five runs in the fifth as its lead swelled to seven. The Zags scored in seven different innings and tallied multiple runs in five innings.
"When you go through nine innings, and not one of them is clean, you can't expect to play catch up offensively, "said head coach Pete Hughes. "There were runners on base all night long. We didn't pitch it well enough and we didn't swing it well enough, to be honest. You combine those two things, and that's the outcome you're going to get.
"Story of two days right there, that's baseball. Credit Gonzaga, they got hits with runners in scoring position and we didn't."
In its five-run fifth, GU strung together four consecutive run-scoring knocks with two outs off Wildcat reliever Jaxon Passino. In total, Gonzaga hit .471 (8 for 17) with two outs and .370 (10 for 27) with runners in scoring position.
The Bulldogs raced out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first, tagging K-State starter Carson Seymour for three runs on three hits. Jack Machtolf's two-out, two-run single was the final blow of the inning.
Seymour logged three innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits. The redshirt sophomore walked three and struck out two in a no-decision outing.
K-State climbed its way back into the game with a four-run third. Kamron Willman scored on a double from Cameron Thompson while Zach Kokoska roped an RBI single in the inning. Dylan Phillips' two-run single leveled the score after three.
Gonzaga responded with two more runs in the top half of the fourth before pushing its lead to seven following the five-run fifth. The Zags added a single run in the sixth and tacked on two in the eighth and three in the ninth.
Four different Bulldogs finished the game with three RBI. Brett Harris went 4 for 4 with five runs scored while Tyler Rando recorded a 4-for-6 effort.
Kokoska and Phillips both went 2 for 4 to lead the K-State offense.
Five K-State relievers combined to allow 11 earned runs on 13 base hits over six innings. In total, the Cats issued eight walks and hit five batters.
K-State continues the Sanderson Ford College Classic Sunday against New Mexico at 6 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed on FloBaseball (paid) with radio coverage on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM). Fans can also catch live, free audio at K-StateSports.com/watch.
