K-State Stumbles at Texas on Sunday

AUSTIN, Texas – K-State held an 11-point advantage in the second quarter, but Texas forced the Wildcats into 15 turnovers and scored 35 points over the second and third quarters to defeat K-State, 59-48, on Sunday in the Erwin Center.

K-State (6-14, 1-12 Big 12) broke open a tie game with a 9-0 run to build a 13-4 lead with 2:52 remaining in the first quarter. Emilee Ebert started the run with a pair of free throws. Laura Macke then added her second driving layup of the afternoon.

After a defensive stop, Rachel Ranke pulled up and knocked down her first 3-pointer of the day. Cymone Goodrich then chipped in with two free throws for the nine-point lead. During the run, K-State held the Longhorns without a field goal for over five minutes.

The Wildcats would hold a 17-8 lead at the end of the first period, as Christianna Carr knocked down two free throws and Taylor Lauterbach tallied a layup with 52 seconds left. K-State was 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the first quarter.

After Carr finished an acrobatic layup seconds into the second quarter to give the Wildcats a 19-8 lead. Carr was the only Wildcat to reach double figures, as she finished with 12 points.

Texas (15-6, 9-5 Big 12) answered with an 8-0 rally to force a K-State timeout with 7:11 remaining. Kyra Lambert hit a 3-pointer to start the run. Celeste Taylor added a 3-pointer of her own with Audrey Warren banking in a 15-foot jumper from the top of the key to close the K-State lead to 19-16.

K-State snapped the Texas run and rebuilt the advantage to 25-20, as Ebert and Jada Moore finished in the paint. 

The Longhorns responded with a 9-0 run to end the first half and hold a 29-25 lead at the break. Texas boosted its run by forcing the Wildcats into five turnovers in the final 3:50 of the quarter. 

An uneven start to the third quarter with seven combined fouls between the teams, resulted in K-State pulling even at 29 with 7:43 remaining. Ranke finished a layup, while Ebert and Ayoka Lee each made a free throw.

Texas secured a 36-29 lead with 4:43 to play, as Lambert hit her second 3-pointer of the day. She was followed by jumpers from Charli Collier and Taylor for the seven-point advantage.

The Longhorns would increase its lead to nine, 43-34, with 1:34 to play. However, the Wildcats trimmed the gap to five at the end of the third frame, 43-38, as Macke and Carr each made a pair of free throws to close the stanza.

Texas went in front by seven, 45-38, on a jumper from Joanne Allen-Taylor with 8:44 remaining in the fourth quarter. A three-pointer from Carr brought K-State to within four, 45-41, with 8:15 to play. K-State stayed within four, 47-43, with a pair of free throws from Lee with 5:48 to play.

Ranke banked in her second 3-pointer of the day to bring the Wildcats back to within four, 50-46, with 4:17 to play. Allen-Taylor took control and scored five straight points to push the Texas lead back to nine points. 

Collier led the way for Texas with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

K-State finished the afternoon shooting 34.2 percent (13-of-38) from the field and were boosted by an 81.8 percent (18-of-22) effort from the free throw line. Texas ended the day at 39.7 percent (23-of-58).
