Cats in 10th After First Round in Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The K-State Women's Golf team did not start the first 18 holes with the scores they hoped for on Friday, as the Wildcats are in 10th place following the first round of the Florida State Match-Up at Seminole Legacy Golf Club.
"It played tough for us," head coach Kristi Knight said, as the Wildcats shot a first-round score of 309 (+21). "It is a good golf course. The green complexes are challenging, but I think it is more playable than we played it today. In our first time around it (in the practice round), we hit a lot of quality shots, but I think the big thing is we have to start the round with a better mentality. You can't play with doubt. There are birdies out there, there are pars out there. We just have to go get them."
Starting on the back nine, the Wildcats were 13-over par midway through the round but started to pick things up on the front as they were 3-under par on the first four holes after the turn. However, a tough finish to the front nine did not allow the Wildcats to climb any further on the leaderboard.
"It's an interesting course," Knight said. "The par-5's are gettable, but they are very positional at the same time. You can certainly get up on or around the green in two shots, but it's very much about position."
Not all the Wildcats fell victim to the rough finish. Bouncing back from a tough tournament last time out, senior Reid Isaac finished the day by shooting 1-over par 73 with a pair of birdies. She enters Saturday's second round in a five-way tie for 12th place.
"Reid had a great round," Knight said of Isaac's performance. "She hit a lot of greens and that was key. She did a nice job."
Haley Vargas and Heather Fortushniak both finished the day at 6-over par 78 and in a tie for 47th. Niamh McSherry concluded the first round at 8-over par and in a tie for 56th. Freshman Napua Glossner carded a 12-over par 84, and she enters the second round tied for 68th.
"Mentality is huge for tomorrow," Knight said after the first round. "We are talking with them about going out and playing with more trust in their game. It is all about mentality. These ladies are capable."
With the format that plays one round per day instead of the usual two-round first day, the Wildcats were able to use the afternoon to tweak their game and figure out what they did well and where they can improve.
"They are excited about the three-day format," said Knight. "It works to our advantage today that we were not playing 36 holes. When you do get off to a hot start on a 36-hole day you love it, but today wasn't our best day. We want to take advantage of that."
Tournament host and eighth-ranked Florida State led the pack on Friday with a team score of 6-under par 282. Kent State, ranked 12th by Golfstat, followed behind by two strokes. Leading the individual scoreboard after the first round is Florida State's Beatrice Wallen with a 6-under par 66 thanks to an impressive seven birdies.
Kansas State tees off for the second round of the Florida State Match-Up beginning at 9:10 a.m. (CT). Fans can follow with live scoring at www.golfstat.com.
