K-State Comes Up Short to No. 24 Arizona State, 4-1

Feb 07, 2021 | Tennis

TEMPE, Ariz. – Attempting to snatch the momentum from an early defeat in doubles play, the Kansas State women's tennis team could not bring the tides back in their favor against No. 24 Arizona State in singles' competition, which resulted in a 4-1 loss at the Whiteman Tennis Center on Sunday (February 7) afternoon.

"We came out a lot better in singles today," said head coach Jordan Smith. "Especially after losing a one-sided doubles point. We are getting closer to putting all the pieces together. We are not going to reach our peak until we have a complete team effort."

The Wildcats were able to pick up their first point of the spring season due to the efforts of junior Maria Linares. The Maracay, Venezuela native, earned a three-set victory over Arizona State's Sammi Hampton, 7-6, 2-6, 10-6, which placed K-State on the board just ahead of the match being completed. Hampton currently ranks No. 115 in the ITA National Singles poll.

"Credit to Maria today," Smith said. "She managed herself way better today than last week. She got back to playing her style and not reacting to her opponent's tennis. Plus, she got a ranked singles win today so that should help boost her confidence moving forward."

With the win, Linares now sits with a 1-1 record for the spring season.

After taking the doubles point in the match, the Sun Devils (5-1) posted three-straight wins to lock up the victory over K-State (0-2) in the No. 1, 2 and 5 positions for singles play.

The trio of sophomore Karine-Marion Job, senior Margot Decker and junior Anna Turco faltered in their respective matches, which gave Arizona State the three points it needed to pull off the win at the Whiteman Tennis Center.

Job, who played out of the top spot once again, could not extend her match with Arizona State's Ilze Hattingh, losing in two sets, 5-7, 3-6. Hattingh sits at the No. 37 spot in the ITA National Singles rankings.

Decker fell behind early in the No. 3 spot against the Sun Devils' Lauryn John-Baptiste and could not recover, resulting in a two-set defeat, 4-6, 1-6.

In the No. 5 position, Arizona State's Marianna Argryokastriti closed the door on Turco in two sets, 6-1, 6-1, which gave the Sun Devils a 2-0 advantage before Job and Decker fell in their matchups.

It was tough outing for K-State in doubles play, as Turco and Lilla Barzo, who were paired in the No. 3 spot, along with Manami Ukita and Ioana Gheorghita in the No. 2 position, could not stave off the onslaught from the Sun Devils, which resulted in an early 1-0 deficit. Gheorghita/Ukita lost to Kolarova/Morlet, 6-2, in the No. 2 doubles spot, while Barzo/Turco dropped a 6-0 decision to Hamption/Argyrokastraiti at No. 3.

Both Job and Linares went head-to-head with another ranked opponent in the No. 1 doubles' spot, as both Wildcats saw their match go unfinished against the Sun Devils' Ilze Hattingh and Lauryn John-Baptiste. Hattingh and John-Baptiste hold the No. 50 ranking in the ITA National Doubles poll.

The Sun Devils improve to 2-0 all-time against K-State in dual-match play.

K-State will return to Manhattan, Kansas for its 2021 home opener on Friday, February 12 against the Drake Bulldogs at 1 p.m., CT.

"We got closer today against a well-coached ASU team," said Smith. "However, definitely not where we want to be yet."
