Littlejim Strikes Out Eight, Phillips Homers Twice in 10-0 Win

Mar 10, 2021 | Baseball

MANHATTAN, Kan. Dylan Phillips mashed two home runs while five K-State pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout of South Dakota State, as the Wildcats swept a two-game midweek set with a 10-0 win Wednesday night at Tointon Family Stadium.

In the start, Caleb Littlejim struck out a career-high eight batters over four innings, allowing just one hit in earning his first win of the season (1-0). Phillips launched his second and third home runs of the series, as he registered his third career multi-homer game.

"Clean baseball," head coach Pete Hughes said. "That's what I've been looking for the last seven days. That was a clean baseball game. It's all predicated off of a good start, and we got a really good start from Caleb Littlejim. You go four innings and strike out eight with one hit. That's as good as it gets with Caleb. His stuff has gotten better and better, and that was definitely an indication of that."

Littlejim struck out the side in the first inning and had five punchouts through two innings. South Dakota State (5-7) did not record a hit until two outs gone in the third inning. The senior right-hander struck out the side again in the fourth before giving way to the bullpen.

Griffin Hassall, Luke Hauswirth, Phillips and Andrew Stratman held SDSU off the scoreboard over the next five innings, combining to strike out eight hitters of their own. K-State (8-4) ended the night with 16 strikeouts, a season high, and ended the two-game set with 31 total strikeouts.

Phillips' first home run traveled 443 feet, clearing the Edgerley Family Videoboard in right field and handing the Cats a seven-run lead in the third inning. The two-way star hit another solo shot in the sixth inning to cap the Wildcat scoring.

"I was kind of fooled by it, but it was a slider and I was able to stay back just enough and got the barrel to it and got a little help," Phillips said of his second home run. "I didn't get quite all of it.

"I definitely feel really good at the plate. I feel more calm this week and don't really know what it is but I was just seeing it a lot better this week than the last few."

Phillips extended his career-long on-base streak to 23 games, dating back to last season, as the sophomore has recorded an RBI in seven straight games. Phillips has hit safely in 21 of 22 games and has driven in 27 runs over his last 20 contests.

The night's scoring began in the first inning with a solo home run from Austin Garrett, getting his first start of the year and hitting in the No. 2 spot in the order. It marked Garrett's first homer as a Wildcat.

"Austin Garrett is an unselfish team guy that's been waiting for his opportunity," added Hughes. "He just works and when his name got called, he was ready. Those unselfish guys just get locked in with winning and being part of a team and the preparation. It didn't surprise me. That's why I put him up in the order in the two-hole. I'm confident in his abilities. He got us going, and I was happy for him."

Daniel Carinci roped a two-run single as part of K-State's three-run first inning. Nick Goodwin added an RBI single to help the Cats double their lead after the second inning.

Cameron Uselton, getting his first start of his career, and Kamron Willman each produced RBI singles in the fifth inning. The Wildcats scored runs in five of the first six frames and tallied multiple runs in three separate innings.

Carinci, Garrett, Phillips and Terrence Spurlin all had multiple base hits while Carinci and Phillips each had a team-high two RBI. Eight of K-State's starting nine registered a hit in the game.

SDSU got a runner to third base just once Wednesday night. The Jacks loaded the bases in the sixth inning before Hassall, who logged two innings in relief of Littlejim, ended the threat with his third strikeout.

Jackrabbits' starter Owen Bishop took the loss after giving up seven runs (five earned) on seven hits over three innings. Bishop struck out two and walked three.

K-State hit .400 (4-for-10) with two outs with four two-out RBI while SDSU went 2-for-11 (.182) with two gone. The Jackrabbits were hitless with runners on base, going 0-for-11.

The Wildcats connected on nine home runs in the two-game series and now have 19 home runs over their last eight contests.

K-State travels to Houston, Texas, for four games in three days against Northern Illinois and Rice at Reckling Park starting Friday. All four games will have radio coverage on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with free, live audio available at K-StateSports.com/watch.
