Wildcats Come Up Short to Horned Frogs, 4-3, on Sunday Afternoon
Mar 14, 2021 | Tennis
FORT WORTH, Texas ā A late comeback bid in singles play could not be sustained by the Kansas State women's tennis team, who fell to TCU, 4-3, on Sunday (March 14) afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
Ā
"I'm proud of these ladies for their fight back today," said head coach Jordan Smith. "Sure, we came up just short, but this was a better showing than how we performed on Friday. This team could have used every reason and excuse from this weekend to lose today. That didn't happen. We're getting back on track."
Ā
Trailing 0-2 in the middle of singles' competition, the Wildcats (4-4) paved their way back into the match with wins on courts five and six, due to the dominating outings from senior Lilla Barzo and sophomore Ioana Gheorghita. Barzo remained steady from the No. 5 position and earned the first point of the match for K-State with a two-set win over TCU's Stevie Kennedy, 6-2, 6-2.
Ā
Making her 2021 singles debut in dual-match play, Gheorghita dazzled on court six with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against TCU's Addy Guevara. This was Gheorghita's first dual-match win for singles' competition since April 7, 2019.
Ā
"Really proud of Ioana," said Smith. "Ioana found out she was playing singles during the pre-match warmups. She's been waiting her turn to play in the lineup. It came today and she did great."
Ā
With the score tied at 2-2, K-State would drop its next two matchups from the No. 1 and 3 positions, allowing TCU (8-5) to take control of the match and collect the winning points on Sunday afternoon.
Ā
Sophomore Karine-Marion Job took on TCU's Tate Schroeder on court one and battled to the end, as the Lyon, France, native slipped up in two sets to the Horned Frogs' ace player, 5-7, 5-7. Schroeder - who ranks No. 46 overall in the ITA Top 125 Singles poll ā broke two set tiebreakers to hand Job the loss at the top of the lineup.
Ā
The match point was tallied from the No. 3 spot, as freshman Manami Ukita wound up pushing her outing with TCU's Mercedes Aristegui to a third set but found herself on the wrong side of box score, resulting in a 1-6, 6-4, 2-6 defeat. Ā
Ā
Just before K-State's comeback bid started, junior Maria Linares went head-to-head with the Horned Frogs' Marie Norris on court two, but came up empty handed in a 2-6, 0-6 loss. Norris ranks No. 68 overall in the ITA National Top 125 Singles poll.
Ā
Senior Margot Decker held her own and delivered for K-State in the last singles matchup of the evening, dispatching Isabel Pascual of TCU in three sets, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4. The win from Decker boosted K-State to three points as the match concluded.
Ā
TCU recorded the first point of the match in doubles' competition, capturing set wins on court one and two, which helped the Horned Frogs jump ahead 1-0 entering singles play.
Ā
K-State will return home to prepare for its annual Sunflower Showdown in Lawrence, Kansas on Sunday, March 21 against in-state rival Kansas.
Ā
"Just need to get back to some consistency with practice this week," Smith said. "More point play scenarios and we'll be ready for KU."
