K-State Records First Road Win, Takes Down West Virginia
Mar 28, 2021 | Tennis
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A shorthanded West Virginia squad was no match for the Kansas State women's tennis team, as the Wildcats secured their first road win of the 2021 campaign with a 4-2 victory over the Mountaineers on Sunday (March 28) morning at the Summit Tennis Academy.
West Virginia – which only had five available players for Sunday's match – was forced into walkovers during both doubles and singles play. Those walkovers contributed to two of K-State's four points on the day.
With a walkover in the No. 3 doubles spot, the Wildcats only needed to win one of the two possible matchups for doubles' competition. On court two, senior Lilla Barzo and freshman Manami Ukita put together a 6-3 set win to post the first point of the match, as the duo defeated West Virginia's Momoko Nagato and Amber Fuller.
Singles play began with another walkover, as sophomore Ioana Gheorghita was declared the winner by default in the No. 6 position, improving K-State's lead to 2-0.
The Wildcats would then dispatch the Mountaineers at the No. 3 and 4 positions, with Barzo and Ukita fighting off multiple set tiebreakers to collect the final points of the match.
Barzo hammered down on court four and notched a two-set victory over West Virginia's Amber Fuller, 6-1, 7-6 (7). That victory marked the first time the Szeged, Hungary, native has earned a win at the No. 4 spot.
Following Barzo's impressive performance was Ukita, who brought the heat on court three and finished off the Mountaineers' Nadya Maslova, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (7). The win evened Ukita's mark at the No. 3 position – 2-2 – for the 2021 season.
Even with the victory in the bag, K-State attempted to tack on a few more wins in the singles lineup but came up empty handed on courts one and two. Sophomores Karine-Marion Job and Rosanna Maffei both were upended by their Mountaineer counterparts, as Job was bested by West Virginia's Anastasia Bovolskaia, 6-3, 7-6 (11), while Maffei fell in her third set – which was a winner-take-all scenario – at 7-6 (7), 3-6, 1-0 (10).
The win over the Mountaineers marks the first time since February 22, 2020 that K-State has earned a victory outside of Manhattan, as the Wildcats dispatched DePaul, 4-1, in Iowa City, Iowa.
K-State returns home for a few days before finishing its three-match road trip in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Wednesday, March 31 against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.
