Mar 04, 2021 | Rowing
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team, in conjunction with the Big 12 Conference, revealed the 2021 race schedule today (March 4), which features six races in total.
"Despite current challenges, we are pleased to have established a near-to-normal schedule that will challenge and develop our young team," said head coach Pat Sweeney. "The athletes have worked hard to stay ready for competition and they are eager to see what we can do. Every race must be a step forward as we prepare for the Big 12 Championship in May."
The race schedule kicks off on March 13 when K-State travels to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to participate in the Oklahoma Scrimmage for the sixth consecutive season. The scrimmage always plays an important part in helping the team gain valuable experience and improve upon their technique.
The Wildcats will then compete at the Creighton Duel for the first time on March 27 in Omaha, Nebraska.
The annual trip to the Sunshine State Invitational will take place on April 2-3 in Sarasota, Florida. In the last two outings at the Sunshine State Invitational, K-State has collected four runner-up finishes and two bronze medals in the grand finals.
For the middle of April, K-State will make its way back to the Sooner State for its fourth competition of the season, as the team is slated to take on Tulsa and Central Oklahoma at the Tulsa Triangular on April 10th.
The Wildcats will go head-to-head with in-state rival Kansas on May 1st for the annual Sunflower Showdown. Over the past two seasons, K-State has recorded two-straight wins over the Jayhawks, including a 22-0 sweep in 2019.
The schedule will wrap up on May 16th in Austin, Texas, where K-State will compete in the Big 12 Championship. From 2017-19, the Wildcats posted two top-three finishes at the conference race. In 2009 and 2014, the Wildcats recorded program-best runner-up finishes at the Big 12 Championship.
K-State competed in three events before the 2019-20 racing season was cancelled due to COVID-19. In their last meet at the Sac State Duel, the Wildcats earned a pair of victories in the 3v8+ and 1v4+ races to go along with runner-up finishes in the 2v8+ and 1v8+ races.
