K-State Looking to Bounce Back in Missouri
Apr 03, 2021 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following a 13th-place finish last week at Old Waverly, the Kansas State men's golf team will look to rebound at the Missouri Tiger Invitational, held at the par-72, 7,221-yard Club at Old Hawthorne.
The Missouri Tiger Invitational is a two day, 54-hole format, with 36 holes being played on Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday. Monday's first round will tee off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m., with continuous play into the second round.
K-State has had previous success in Columbia, competing in 2018 and finishing second of 19 teams after carding a 14-under par 850. Also, in 2019, the Wildcats tallied a 33-under par 831 and notched another second-place finish. Graduate student Jacob Eklund, who returns to the lineup following wrist surgery, finished a career-best second in 2019 after shooting 13-under par 203, the fifth-lowest score in school history.
"We are looking forward to competing at Missouri this weekend," head coach Grant Robbins said. "Old Hawthorne is a great golf course, and one that I think fits our team very well. It's good to be getting back to the Midwest and playing on a course and in conditions that we are familiar with.
"We are really excited to get Jake back who has been recovering from wrist surgery," Robbins continued. "It's been a long and frustrating process for him, but he's getting more comfortable and putting up some good numbers. I know he's really anxious to get back out there. Ryan Bender has also been putting up some low numbers in qualifying, and I'm really happy to see him earn a spot in the lineup this week."
Sophomore Tim Tillmanns stays in the first slot, followed by Eklund and sophomore Riccardo Leo. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Bender makes his return to the lineup, his first action since the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate in February. Junior Will Hopkins and freshman Luke O'Neill are playing off for the last spot Saturday. Redshirt Freshman Ethan Miller will make his Wildcat debut, and compete as an individual.
Joining the Wildcats in Missouri are Bowling Green, Drake, Illinois State, tournament-host Missouri, Missouri State, Morehead State, North Alabama, SIUE, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Southern Miss, UMKC and Wichita State.
