MANHATTAN, Kan. – Seven Wildcats earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team distinctions for the 2021 spring season, including seniors Margot Decker and Lilla Barzo, juniors Maria Linares and Anna Turco and sophomores Karine-Marion Job, Ioana Gheorghita and Rosanna Maffei, the conference announced today (May 6).
The Wildcats tied for the conference lead in Academic All-Big 12 selections, alongside Baylor and Oklahoma (7).
Those seven honorees for K-State were among 38 other individuals on the First Team, as a total of 47 made up the team. First team recipients consisted of members who have maintained a 3.20 GPA or higher.
The duo of Linares and Turco collected their third-straight honor on the conference's academic first team, while the trio of Decker, Gheorghita and Maffei earned their second nods for the yearly academic award.
Receiving their first academic distinctions from the Big 12 this season was Barzo and Job.
The total exceeded last year's academic honorees, as six Wildcats notched all-academic distinctions in 2020.
Job and Linares led the charge for K-State all season, primarily slotted out of the No. 1 and 2 singles' positions. Job, a native of Lyon, France, tallied seven wins in dual-match play from the No. 1 spot, with three of those victories coming against ITA-ranked opponents. Linares produced a 7-6 mark from the No. 2 spot this spring, which included a ranked win over Kansas' Malkia Ngounoue, who was ranked at No. 102 in the nation back on April 3.
Playing primarily out of the No. 4-6 positions were Gheorghita, Turco and Barzo, as all three combined to score 15 wins in the latter half of singles play this spring.
Decker and Maffei provided a stable presence from the No. 3-4 positions, as Maffei picked up two wins from the No. 3 line, while Decker recorded two victories from the No. 4 spot.
K-State concluded its spring season at the Big 12 Tennis Championship in Waco, Texas, where the Wildcats fell to Kansas in the first round on April 22. The Wildcats finished the spring slate with a 7-12 overall record and a 2-7 mark in conference play.
To qualify for the academic accolade, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
