Wildcats drop both ranked match ups at home
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team suffered a consecutive loss to a ranked opponent, falling 4-2 to TCU on Sunday (March 22) at Peakform Sports and Wellness Center.
#62 K-State (5-8, 2-5 Big 12) clinched the doubles point for the second time this weekend, starting with a point advantage over #25 TCU (13-2, 7-1 Big 12) but high scoring first sets and three-set matches gave the Horned Frogs the upper hand.
Freshmen Varvara Bernovich and Diana Smolinska won their first doubles match in three weeks, defeating Raquel Caballero Chica and Jennifer Jackson in the no. 2 spot, 6-2. Freshman Sasha Kyselova and sophomore Chanel Rustemova won a consecutive match in the no. 3 position, defeating Cayetana Gay and Tomi Main 6-2, now 4-3 as a duo in Big 12 play.
The sister duo of junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav and freshman Martaa Chogsomjav, ranked #54, went unfinished in the no. 1 spot, facing Victoria Gomez O'Hayon and Yu-Chin Tsai at 5-2.
Maralgoo landed back in the win column with a straight sets victory in the no. 2 position over Gomez O'Hayon. Avoiding a first set tiebreaker at 7-5, she maintained her composure for a sweep at 7-5, 6-4, her 10th career two-set victory in conference matches.
Martaa fell to another ranked opponent in the no. 1 spot, this time #74 Caballero Chica. She started off with the lead in the first set but eventually fell in a 2-7 tiebreaker and was unable to regain her momentum in the second set, falling short 6-7 (2-7), 2-6.
Smolinska faced her first ranked opponent in the no. 3 position, #125 Cristina Ramos Sierra, while encountering a consecutive three-set match. She starting off strong in the first set but then fell behind in a high scoring 5-7 set but bounced back in the next with a 6-4 second set win. In the last set she started to lose steam, ultimately falling 5-7, 6-4, 2-6.
Kyselova and Bernovich both suffered straight sets losses, in the no. 4 and 6 spots, respectively. Facing Tsai in the no. 4 spot, Kyselova was able to stream together just one point in each set with a 1-6, 1-6 final score. Similarly, Bernovich collected just two points in the second set against Gay in the no. 6 position, but it wasn't enough to bounce back at 0-6, 2-6.
Rustemova was up in the third set against Jackson before going unfinished. After a slow start falling 3-6, she bounced back in the no. 5 spot not allowing her opponent as many points. Rustemova was up two points in the last set with a score of 3-6, 6-2, 4-2 when the match stopped, marking her third unfinished three-set match this spring.
The Wildcats will hit the road again for matches in the mountains, playing #53 BYU (15-4, 4-3 Big 12) on Thursday (March 26) before facing #44 Utah (12-5, 5-2 Big 12) on Saturday (March 28).
