K-State Drops Sunday’s Rubber Game at Baylor

May 09, 2021 | Baseball

WACO, Texas – K-State tied the program's single-season home run record Sunday afternoon, but Baylor scored in each of the game's first five innings in clinching the series' rubber game over K-State, 23-3, in seven innings at Baylor Ballpark.

K-State (28-17, 7-10 Big 12) got a solo homer from Dom Hughes in the sixth for the team's 75th home run of the season. Hughes' first career home run tied the single-season program record set in 1997.

Baylor (29-14, 9-9 Big 12) sent 20 to the plate in a 17-run fifth inning. The first 17 BU hitters reached base in the inning, as 16 runs scored before an out was recorded. The Wildcats used five pitchers in the fifth, all before the first out.

The five K-State hurlers combined to allow nine hits, four going for extra bases, along with five walks and a hit batter. Carson Seymour registered all three outs in the inning as he picked up three strikeouts.

Seymour struck out five over two innings in his second career relief outing.

Andy Thomas homered twice, including a two-run shot in the fifth. Thomas drove in six and finished the day 3-for-4. Jared McKenzie recorded four hits in a 4-for-5 day.

Four Bears produced multiple hits while five ended with multiple runs batted in. Esteban Cardoza- Oquendo tallied four RBI.

Thomas' first home run of the day came in the bottom of the fourth, with the two-run shot coming with two outs and the Cats trailing by just four at 4-0.

An RBI triple from Tre Richardson preceded a sacrifice fly by Antonio Valdez in the opening inning, giving Baylor an early two-run lead.

Jack Pineda roped an RBI single in the second and Cardoza-Oquendo's two-out RBI single ended the day for starter Kasey Ford. Ford, who entered the game with a Big-12 low 1.59 ERA, went 2 2/3 innings in allowing four runs on six hits and three walks.

Three of Baylor's first six runs came with two outs.

The Cats plated three in the sixth, with Hughes' leadoff homer sparking a string of three straight hits to open the inning. Daniel Carinci followed with a single before Cameron Thompson laced a double. Both would later score in the inning on walk pitches from BU reliever Jacob Ashkinos.

Zach Kokoska finished 0-for-2 and saw his career-long on-base streak end at 41 games. Kokoska's stretch marked the second-longest by a Wildcat in the Big 12 era, trailing only Nick Martini's 93-game streak.

Blake Helton earned the win after throwing five scoreless innings and scattering three hits. Helton walked one and struck out three.
