Wicks Sets Single-Season Strikeout Record as Cats Drop Doubleheader

May 14, 2021 | Baseball

LAWRENCE, Kan. Jordan Wicks breaking K-State's single-season strikeout record highlighted a day in which the Wildcats dropped both games of a Friday doubleheader to rival Kansas, as the Jayhawks took the opener 2-0 before a 10-0 decision in seven innings in the nightcap at Hoglund Ballpark.

Wicks' six strikeouts in game one put his season total to 102, surpassing A.J. Morris' 100 strikeouts in 2009. The sophomore left-hander currently leads the Big 12 in strikeouts and is third in K-State history with 214 in his career.

Wicks suffered the loss in the opener despite logging his seventh quality start in 13 outings this season. He ended the day with two earned runs allowed on six hits over 6 2/3 innings.

In the day's finale, KU's Eli Davis tossed seven no-hit innings in clinching the series for the Jayhawks. Davis struck out four and walked two on 97 pitches. It was the first time the Wildcats have been no-hit since 2014.

"Disappointing day today, to be honest," head coach Pete Hughes said after the game. "This was an important series that we needed to win to get where we want to go, and to be non-competitive offensively is frustrating. Wicks was the bright spot; he gave us a chance in game one with another quality start, but we couldn't take advantage with the bases loaded in the ninth. We have to get him some run support.

"But tomorrow is another day and another chance to win on the road. We have to be able to bounce back and need to find a way to win tomorrow."

In game one, K-State (28-20, 7-13 Big 12) got the go-ahead run to first base as the Wildcats loaded the bases in the top of the ninth with two outs. KU closer Jonah Ulane earned his ninth save of the year, ending the game with his second strikeout of the inning.

A pair of triples led to both of KU's runs, as Skyler Messinger led off the fourth with a triple to center field and later scored on an infield single off the bat of Brett Vosik. Maui Ahuna roped a one-out triple to left in the fifth inning and would come home on an RBI fielder's choice by Tavian Josenberger.

In relief of Wicks, Eric Torres struck out the side in the eighth, as he logged a 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Torres extended his scoreless streak to 14 innings, a stretch that spans his last seven appearances.

Cole Larsen pitched eight-plus scoreless frames in the win for the Jayhawks (28-23, 7-13 Big 12), as he went into the ninth inning with just four hits allowed and a walk while striking out five. Larsen earned his fifth win and is now 5-5 on the year.

Two of the Wildcats' four hits went for extra bases, with Dylan Phillips and Cameron Thompson each recording a double. Dom Hughes and Thompson each singled in the ninth before Chris Ceballos drew a two-out walk to fill the bases.

The Jayhawks raced out to a six-run lead in the first inning of the nightcap, as four straight reached base off starter Kasey Ford. KU got an RBI double from Vosik to go with run-scoring singles from Messinger and Tom Lichty.

The defense behind Ford committed three errors in the first inning. Ford's day ended after 4 2/3 innings with 10 runs (eight earned) allowed on eight hits and three walks.

Kansas added two more runs in both the third and fifth frames, with Dylan Ditzenberger turning in an RBI single in the third and a two-run, two-out double in the fifth. Ditzenberger finished game two 2-for-4 with 3 runs batted in.
Lichty went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Cole Johnson walked and was hit by a pitch while Zach Kokoska walked, accounting for the Cats' only base runners of the game.

Zak Herbers threw 1 1/3 innings without allowing a hit. Herbers punched out two and walked two in relief of Ford.

K-State's streak of 12 consecutive games with a home run came to an end. It marked just the second and third games the Cats have been shut out this season.

In two games, the Wildcats went 0-for-10 with two outs and 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

K-State and Kansas concludes the Dillons Sunflower Showdown Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and the ESPN app. Radio coverage will be available on the K-State Sports Radio Network with live, free audio streaming at K-StateSports.com/watch.
