MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State soccer head coach Mike Dibbini has announced an addition to his 2021 coaching staff, hiring David Romay as an assistant coach/goalkeeper coach. Romay will be responsible for working with K-State's goalkeeping position group.
"Dave brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to our Goalkeeper Union and team," said Dibbini. "We are excited for the addition. We felt like the program needed a full-time goalkeeper coach with solid experience and we got that in Dave. His training and knowledge will be valuable to our program. We are looking forward to having him join our soccer family."
Romay joins the Wildcats following three seasons with the Houston Dynamo organization in MLS. Romay served as the goalkeeper coach in the Houston Dynamo Developmental Academy and also with the team's U23 squad.
Romay has also worked with current Houston Dash starting netminder and 2017 NWSL Rookie of the Year finalist, Jane Campbell. Romay worked with Campbell beginning in the 2019 season, as Campbell has pocketed seven shutouts in 34 starts in that timeframe.
"David is one of the most dedicated coaches I have ever trained with," said Campbell. "His attention to detail and desire to teach players about the evolving game of soccer is something that has propelled my career so far forward. Training with him has been the biggest blessing and I have no doubt in my mind that the women at Kansas State will feel the same. He is the definition of a 'team first' coach, and more importantly, the idea of having his players grow their own game is his highest priority. Kansas State is lucky to have him."
A 2019 and 2020 graduate of Texas A&M, Romay aided Houston's U23 team to consecutive Mid South Division titles in 2018 and 2019. He also helped mentor the U23 team to back-to-back qualifications in the MLS Lamar Hunt Open Cup in 2019 and 2020.
While providing coaching and skill development with the Houston Dynamo, Romay served as an assistant coach with both the men's and women's soccer programs at NCAA Division III University of St. Thomas in Houston. Romay aided both programs by coaching the goalkeepers for both teams in 2019 and mentored both to starting goalkeepers, Pedro Medrano and Olivia Futch, to All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) honors.
Prior to his time with the Houston Dynamo, Romay served as the Assistant Director of Coaching with the Brazos Valley Youth Soccer Association from 2016 to 2018.
Romay holds coaching licenses of UEFA B Candidate, UEFA B GK Candidate, Scottish FA GK 1.3, U.S. Soccer C License, NSCAA Advanced National GK and NSCAA National Diploma.
K-State returns 18 letter winners and 85 percent of the goal scorers from 2020 including Brookelynn Entz, who was a 2020 MAC Hermann Trophy candidate and a 2020 All-Big 12 First Team selection. The Wildcats also welcome in 14 newcomers for the 2021 season.
