The following are quotes from the session.
The Wildcats begin their sixth season on Thursday, August 15, as K-State plays the first of two exhibition matches with a stop at South Dakota State. The Wildcats will host Wyoming in the second exhibition at Buser Family Park on Sunday, August 15 at 1 p.m. The season officially kicks off on Thursday, August 19, at 7 p.m., against Weber State.
MIKE DIBBINI, HEAD COACH
On coming into this season with a sense of normalcy…
"It's been great. A lot more consistency and an understanding of what approach to take, not being unpredictable. It's just a lot more normal. Moving into the situation, although it's still around and we have to be cautious, there's a lot more consistency within it all."
On Rachel Harris and the competition at the goalkeeper spot…
"We really have three solid goalkeepers on any given day. It will be a tough task for our goalkeeper coach Dave Romay to make some big decisions. We literally can make decisions based off the personnel and the style of play of the other team, based on all three keepers. So, too early to tell. Rachel may have the most experience but those other two gained a lot of valuable experience last year."
On Brookelynn Entz coming back…
"It speaks volumes. For Brookelynn to decide to come back for one last year, work on her masters, and be a part of this program shows our program's evolution and where it's come from the beginning for a player like that to come back and be a part of it. It just shows the direction we're going in. We're excited to have her back.'
On his reaction to Brookelynn Entz returning…
"I was supporting her for whatever she decided to do from day one. I honestly did not really know until I was messing around with the board and I was plugging her back into the lineup. It just fell into place. I think she saw a little bit of the direction we are moving from the excitement last fall. We had good momentum and then the excitement of some really, really good transfers we had coming in, motivated her to come back and be a part of something where she has unfinished business."
On benefitting from the transfer portal this offseason…
"I think this year it did. It allowed us to fill in the areas of need and concern due to injuries, medical redshirts, and so on. I feel really, really good about the direction we're going in terms of depth. That was a key component that was missing, I felt like, in the last couple of years. Despite not having injuries, we have some depth this year."
On the transition to the new assistant coaches…
"I think that speaks volumes of our program when you have coaches that have been here and are being recruited to other programs. We're doing it the right way. They move on and do big things, and spread their wings a little bit, and we bring in two unbelievable, experienced coaches to keep this thing rolling."
On taking the program to new heights…
"It's been a major challenge when you start from the beginning to where we are now. I think we've come a long way. We won three games last year in the Big 12, that shows a lot of progress from the first three, four years in the Big 12. I feel pretty good. Preseason picked number ten but I think that's just great motivation for us."
On the biggest factor for more success this season…
"Continuing the momentum and the mentality that we had at the second half of the season last year. We knew how to win those close games, more cutting edge in those close games. I really feel if we continue that momentum that the sky's the limit for this team."
On the depth of this roster…
"I feel really good. I felt like we have a group of young ladies that love the game and compete hard and have a mental edge that we've always been looking for. The depth, I would say, would probably be the biggest, as far as starting a program from scratch five years ago."
On the biggest thing Brookelynn Entz brings to the team…
"She is a great ambassador for this program. She's been there from the very, very beginning and understands how hard it has been and how much of a challenge it was. But she's also seen the growth and where we started and where we are now. Like I said, having a professional player like that coming back speaks volumes to what we are doing here at K-State."
On Shae Turner's improved role…
"She's just a great leader. She's extremely mature. She's brought that intangible from her freshman year on but she's grown into providing a big spark defensively on the field but also a general in terms of her voice and her attention to detail and her leadership abilities to be that leader on the field and off the field."
On who will provide a new spark on offense…
"We really have a lot more depth in that area from our transfers. Porter List, Roo Yarnell-Williams both have an edge and I feel really good about them. From a freshman standpoint right now, only being a few days in, Riley Baker has really, really come along. Then we have some players from the past who haven't seen the field due to injuries, Caylee Thornhill is coming on. We obviously have our returners that played significantly that will help be a big part and impact, with Kyler (Goins) and Brookelynn Entz, Bailey (Nemechek), and Kursten (Von Klahr), as far as a transfer that came here early in the spring. But overall, the depth and the edge up top, we have a lot of weapons. Oh, and we can't forget Maddie, the Weichels, Maddie and Marisa. They bring a presence as well."
On Emily Crain…
"She's another one like Brookelynn Entz as far as leadership goes. Understands where we were and where we are now. She's seen this program evolve. She's been a part of the peaks and valleys. So much experience in the program. She's also matured tremendously. She loves this team and she loves K-State."
On the last names on the jerseys…
"I think it was a little bit of a collaboration between our administration, fan experience, and coaching staff. Something I've always wanted to do but I think we are ready for the names on the back."
On the new name, image, and likeness rules...
"I really haven't seen it as much within the soccer department. I'm sure more from the football side of things, major, major sports. But I really haven't had to deal with it yet and I don't have that experience yet. So, as soon as I do, I can answer that next time."
BROOKELYNN ENTZ, SENIOR MIDFIELDER
On how excited she is to be back...
"I'm so excited to be back. Just being back for these two weeks now that we've been starting, being back for the summer, I am so confident I made the right decision. I'm so happy to be back here, I'm so happy that I have another year before I go onto Kansas City to spend with this team, to spend with the coaches, learning more from them. I'm super excited about the new coaches. I think they bring a lot of experience, a lot of new ideas, and I think that's super good for me going onto play pro next year because I can learn new things from them that I haven't learned before."
On her decision process to return…
"I actually decided to come back before I got drafted. I had an idea that I would get drafted so that was a factor for me. I feel confident coming back to K-State because obviously getting drafted was my goal since I was a little kid. I thought the way we ended the season on a really high note and then I saw Dibinni getting these transfers in, getting a lot of good players in. I saw, I think before anything happened on the field, I saw where this program is going and where this year can take us. I think I wanted to be a part of that. I've been here for all this time, doing all this work and I think this is the season where it's going to take off and I didn't want to miss that."
On Coach Dibinni's reaction to her decision…
"Yeah I went into his office and I told him I wanted to stay and he literally sat there and looked at me for probably ten seconds. I was like, 'Are you going to say something', and he was like 'I can't believe you're coming back'. He was so excited and I was so excited to play for him. Obviously, he's done so much for me and been a huge part of my development. He's giving me everything and I respect him so much. I really love him like family and he's been amazing for me."
On unfinished business…
"Of course. Obviously, we would've made the Big 12 tournament but didn't get a chance to play in it because it didn't happen. Obviously, that's been my goal since I got here and I think we're past that goal now. I think that's too low of a goal for us, especially this season. I want to make the NCAA tournament personally. I think that's a very realistic goal. I wouldn't say it if I didn't think we could do it."
On any personal goals this season…
"Very team related. Obviously, I want to score goals. I want to do those kinds of things. But I would rather not score any goals and we win every single game than me score 50 goals and we don't win."
On being picked to finish last in the Big 12…
"It doesn't bother me. They've picked us last every single year. I'm not exactly sure why. I think that it just gives us more motivation to prove them wrong. It doesn't bother me, I'm just ready to prove them wrong. I'm a competitor. I'm just ready to show everybody what we can do."
On the biggest factor to more success this season…
"I would say, belief in ourselves and trust in each other. I think winning is a mentality, winning is a mindset and winning is a habit. We need to start those habits and I think we are starting those habits. That starts in training and bringing consistency every single day and really focusing on one game at a time. So right now we are focused on South Dakota State. That's all we're focused on. We're not focused on winning all these Big 12 games. We're taking it one game at a time and trying to be consistent every single time."
On her teammates' reaction to her returning....
"Shae Turner is probably my best friend on the team so being able to have her for one more season to build that relationship more with her was something that was super exciting to me. She is my best friend in the whole world and I'm so glad that I get to be with her for six more months."
On the new name, image, and likeness rules…
"I honestly think it's been a really cool opportunity. I think that college athletes are doing some really good things with the NIL. It just frees us up more. The NCAA has so many rules and I think that it allows us to be ourselves and be able to support who we want to support. I just did an ad with Carlos O' Kelly's on my Instagram, that was really fun. I'm starting to do something with Firefly Recovery. That's a recovery device that you put on your legs that basically twitches and makes your blood flow more. You can wear it on a plane, on a bus and get that blood moving. So, I think that's really cool and I'm excited."
On being from Kansas and having the amount of success she is having at Kansas State…
"Yeah I think so. Nobody knows where Newton is, nobody knows what Newton is. There are no big clubs around. I never played for a big club. The coaching staff and I have talked about it a lot. It doesn't matter who you play for, where you're from, if you work hard you will get the opportunity. I think it shows that coming from K-State as well, being able to get drafted. It shows we are doing something right here and it shows that you can make it from anywhere. You should be somewhere you're valued, somewhere you're loved. Literally I love everything about being here at K-State. I think that has elevated my game so much."
SHAE TURNER, JUNIOR MIDFIELDER
On the challenges of last season…
"It was definitely a journey for sure. Having nine games in the fall, then having five weird games in the spring, and our team changing so much between the fall and the spring with people leaving and transfers coming in. It was so different because you didn't know what weekend you're going to play and if the game was going to happen. Just having to be on your toes every second. Honestly, that's what makes it fun though. You come out here because you love the game. We were so thankful to play last year that it was worth it for sure."
On her relationship with Brookelynn Entz…
"So excited. Whenever she first said she was coming back I didn't believe her because she had decided she was going pro. I wasn't believing it at first. But when she was actually at practice the first day I was like, okay it's happening, she's actually here, I can actually be excited about this. I was so thankful to have her for another full year, so yeah, just super excited."
ALIYAH EL-NAGGAR, JUNIOR DEFENDER
On the new name, image, and likeness rules…
"I think it's really cool because it's a new program for us and everything. I personally have not been involved in it yet because I've not gotten myself out there. But I think it's really cool how we are able to do that now. I believe it can cause confusion with having money involved but I also do believe that it's really cool for players to be a part of."
On what she needs to improve upon heading into the season…
"I actually came back from an injury in the spring, I tore my pelvic muscle. So, I've just been rehabbing that spot and putting in the work every single day. I think one of the biggest things is possibly changing my positioning from outside back to playing center back again. Just making sure I have that leadership role and just making sure every day I bring 100 percent, 100 percent of the time."
RACHEL HARRIS, REDSHIRT JUNIOR GOALKEEPER
On the back line this season…
"I think we can be really good. I think this is the best back line that I have been around. With our transfers coming in and with Don (Trentham) and what he can do."
On any new mentality with the defense…
"I'd say it's different in the fact that we're going to be hungry and we're not going to let shots off as easy. We're going to go hard on tackles, not be known as a dirty team or anything like that, but we are going to be physical."
BAILEY NEMECHEK, JUNIOR MIDFIELDER
On Brookelynn Entz returning…
"So excited. I love having her in the midfield with me. She's a great player and I love to learn from her and play with her. She brings a lot to the team."
On being picked to finish last in the Big 12…
"100 percent, I think that was the best thing that could've happened to us. We're putting that up in our locker room and I think it's going to make us go out and play even harder."
KYLER GOINS, SOPHOMORE FORWARD
On looking forward to the season…
"It feels great. I'm glad COVID didn't take over and ruin everything again but I'm excited to go out there and play with my teammates."
On the offensive improvement…
"Yes, especially with the new players that have come in. They have definitely helped out a lot. I'm really excited for us to go out there and showcase the new players and the ability that we have is insane. I think we are going to shock a lot of people.
On if this offense can be at the top of the conference…
"Yes, 100 percent I do. Like I said, these new players that have come in, they have really helped us out and shown us that they want to win just as badly as we do. We want to go out there and prove to people that we are just as good and that we are ready to win."
MADDIE WEICHEL, SOPHOMORE FORWARD
On her excitement for the upcoming season…
"It's a whole new team. We have a whole new dynamic and I'm really excited to see where that takes us. Excited to take it one game at a time."
On the depth the offense has this season…
"I think that's huge because even people coming off the bench that will make a huge impact where we didn't really have that a lot before. Having a lot of depth will help us out a lot in big games. Competitively too it will help out, at practice and stuff trying to earn your spot."
On her individual goals for this season…
"Personally, I just want to improve and help the team out in any way possible. Improve my own skills, maybe I can get two goals instead of one last year."
EMILY CRAIN, SENIOR DEFENDER
On working with the new coaches…
"I think it's been actually really good. It's nice to have different perspectives come in. I think this was a change that we needed to have someone come in and give us different terminology, new outlooks. It's been super fun, I've really enjoyed it so far."
On new defensive strategies…
"So far we have just been playing, we haven't gone over much strategy, we'll start that tomorrow. But you can definitely tell he is raising the intensity, he is demanding a lot from us. So, I would say the overall effort is much higher."
On the strong depth along the back line…
"Absolutely, we've been scrimmaging against each other and it's 0-0. We're competing no matter who is on starters, who's on non-starters. I feel like Dibbini is comfortable playing anyone at this point. Anyone can help out this team and we have really good depth so I definitely agree with that."
