MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's golf team will open the 2021-22 campaign in Denton, Texas with the Sam Golden Invitational, held Monday and Tuesday at the par-72, 6,288-yard Wildhorse Golf Course at Robson Ranch.
"We are excited to hit the road and start our season at the Sam Golden Invitational," head coach Kristi Knight said. "This is our first trip to Wildhorse Golf Club."
There is certainly quite a bit of optimism within the team heading into the 2021-22 campaign. The Wildcats return five golfers from a year ago, all of whom have played meaningful golf for K-State in some big moments - including senior Heather Fortushniak.
Knight, who is entering her 26th season as head coach, was impressed with what she has seen from her squad in the preseason.
"We have seen some good play in our qualifying rounds," Knight said. "The key for us is to be disciplined in our decision making and be committed to every shot."
The lineup that will compete at the Wildhorse Golf Course is led by returnees Fortushniak, Haley Vargas and Napua Glossner. It also features two highly-touted newcomers in Manon Donche-Gay and Remington Isaac.
Donche-Gay, a transfer from Daytona State Community College, comes to the Wildcats with winning experience. As a sophomore for the Falcons, she claimed the NJCAA Region VIII Individual Championship and finished third at the NJCAA National Championship.
The true freshman Isaac comes to K-State looking to carve her own path following the graduation of her older sister Reid, who just finished her Wildcat career last spring. The elder Isaac recorded seven career top-five wins and has her name plastered all over the Kansas State record book.
Remington certainly has the talent required to duplicate her sister's successes. The Montgomery, Texas product was named the All-Greater Houston Girls Golfer of the Year in 2021 and will get to show her skills at the collegiate level in her home state on Monday.
K-State will compete in a massive 15-team field, including four fellow Big 12 members in Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and TCU. The other 10 spots include Charlotte, Houston, North Texas, Missouri, Mississippi State, Purdue, Texas A&M, Tulane, Tusla and UTSA.
Knight's message to her team going into the Sam Golden Invitational is simple, "Embrace the challenges, have fun and play with heart." The Wildcats will aim to do just that and start the season with an impressive showing.
Kansas State will tee off with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. Fans can follow live scoring at www.golfstat.com throughout the event.
