Wildcats Finish 13th in Season Opener
Sep 14, 2021 | Women's Golf
DENTON, Texas – The Kansas State women's golf team couldn't recapture the play it showed in the first round, as the Wildcats carded a 10-over par 298 on Tuesday to conclude the Sam Golden Invitational at Wildhorse Golf Club.
Â
The Wildcats fell four spots on the final day, finishing in 13th place at 9-over par 873 in their season-opening event.
Â
"We definitely let too many shots get away from us," Associate Head Coach Jared Helin said. "The course was set up to score, and we just didn't executive at the level we expect to."
Â
One bright spot for K-State on the day was freshman Remington Isaac, who carded a 3-under par 69 during the final round to jump 15 spots on the leaderboard. She finished in a tie for 37th place at 1-over par 217.
Â
"It was a great round from Remington today. We knew she had that in her after struggling a bit yesterday, but she made some adjustments in her putting and mindset, and she showed up determined today."
Â
Isaac was just one stroke shy of tying junior Haley Vargas for the team lead over the 54-hole event. Vargas, who shot a 3-over par 75 on Tuesday, finished at even-par 216 for the tournament.
Â
Community-college transfer Manon Donche-Gay finished her first event with the Wildcats in a tie for 46th at 4-over par 220. She was followed by Napua Glossner and Heather Fortushniak, each of whom finished at 12-over par 228 to tie for 71st.
Â
Oklahoma State ran away with the team title with a final score of 36-under par 828, which included a 17-under par 271 score during the final round. Texas Tech (-23), TCU (-21) and Texas A&M (-20) also finished at least 20-under par for the tournament.
Â
Texas A&M's Blanca Fernandez Garcia-Poggio and Mississippi State's Julia Lopez Ramierz each totaled a 14-under par 202 to lead the field, but it was the Aggie who walked away with the individual title due to a better score on the 54th and final hole of the event.
Â
"I know the team is disappointed, but we saw a little of what we are capable of in the first round," Helin said. "We'll bring an improved mentality next week on our home turf."
Â
Kansas State will be back in action next Monday and Tuesday, as the Wildcats host the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational at Colbert Hills. Joining the Wildcats in Manhattan will be Arkansas State, Incarnate Word, Kansas, Nebraska, Sam Houston, Toledo, Tulane and Wichita State.
Â
The event begins on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for 36 holes of continuous golf, while the final round will be held on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.
