MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following a week off from competition, the Kansas State men's golf team returns to action Monday and Tuesday at the esteemed Old Town Club in Winston-Salem, North Carolina for the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational hosted by Wake Forest.
"We are looking forward to competing this week at Wake Forest," head coach Grant Robbins said. "Getting to play against a strong field on a classic course like Old Town that is ranked among the best in the country is going to be a great experience for us."
K-State opened the season on September 13-14 at the Wildcat Invitational, their lone home tournament of the year. The Cats earned a runner-up finish at Colbert Hills, marking a solid start to their 2021-22 campaign.
Robbins is making a slight change in the lineup this week. Tim Tillmanns, Will Hopkins, Luke O'Neill and Ethan Miller all return to the scoring lineup, while Cooper Schultz makes his debut in the five.
Expectations for the redshirt freshman Schutlz are high after winning the Kansas Amateur and finishing 13th during the stroke play portion of the US Amateur this summer. He competed as an individual in the season opener and tied for 21st with a score of 8-over par 224. The Wildcats will need him to put together an effective performance out of the five spot in Winston-Salem.
O'Neill looks to continue his dominant play after he got the season off to a hot start at the Wildcat Invitational. O'Neill led K-State with a tie for fourth place by carding a 2-under par 214, which tied his career low for 54 holes. Though just a sophomore, O'Neill has tons of experience having competed in eight events as a freshman last season. It appears so far that the valuable experience is paying off for the Connemara, Ireland product.
While O'Neill and Schultz are great storylines, the Wildcats will continue to rely on the leadership from Tillmanns, a junior, and Hopkins, a senior.
Tillmanns tied for ninth in his season debut, scoring a 4-over par 220. He will hold down the one spot in the lineup for K-State at the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational.
Though Hopkins struggled in the Wildcat Invitational by tying for 31st with a score of 11-over par 227, the senior has plenty of accomplishments through his years at K-State to prove that he is capable of bouncing back in a big way next week.
The other bright spot from the season opener was Miller, a sophomore who showed he's going to be a key piece of this team moving forward. He captured his first top-10 finish, carding 4-over par 220 to tie for ninth. If Miller performs at that level consistently, the Wildcats will continue to be dangerous in all areas of the lineup.
The three-time national champions Wake Forest will host a 14-team field that includes Charleston, Davidson, Duke, ECU, Kentucky, Loyola (Md.), Penn State, Rutgers, SMU, Southern Miss, UNC-Greensboro and Virginia Tech.
This will be a test for the Wildcats as they leave the comfort of their home course for the first time this season.
"The greens there can be difficult, so it's going to be important for us to be patient, make smart decisions and try to be below the hole as much as possible," Robbins said.
The first and second rounds will be played on Monday with the final round finishing up on Tuesday. It will be 7:30 a.m. (ET) starts to both days. Live scoring can be followed at golfstat.com
