Cats Take a Trip to Waco, Texas for Winter Camp
Jan 05, 2022 | Rowing
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State rowing team headed off to Waco, Texas for their winter camp on Tuesday (January 4). The squad will be rowing on the River Brazos that runs through Baylor's campus.
"This is going to be a good opportunity for the team to come together," stated head coach Patrick Sweeney. "There is a lot of learning that happens at camp. The team is young, and the water time is what we need as we prepare for the season."
Due to the Covid 19 pandemic the Wildcats hosted their 2021 winter training in Manhattan. The team is ready to return to Texas to maximize time on-water. Camp training will focus on mileage and making forward progress.
This training trip is a pivotable opportunity for rowing teams in the Midwest. With the inconsistent conditions in Kansas, a trip like this can make or break the on-water readiness and confidence of young, new-to-sport athletes. The team and staff understand the necessity and importance of winter camp for the program. It is with great excitement and enduring readiness that the athletes arrive in Waco to get to work.
The winter camp is the first of two training camps for the Wildcats. Following the camp in Waco, the team will return to Manhattan to build on strength and conditioning. Winter training in Manhattan will continue until conditions in Kansas become favorable for on-water rowing. The winter training grind will add the necessary power and endurance heading into the team's first match up in Norman, Oklahoma against the Sooners in the OU Scrimmage. This friendly competition will show what the team needs to focus on heading into the spring training camp.
The Cats will then head to Sacramento, California for spring camp from March 11-19. The team will then compete in the Sac State Duel on March 20.
