Wildcats continue competition tomorrow in the K-State Winter Invitational
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The Kansas State track and field team opened its new season at home in Ahern Field House on Friday (Dec. 9) with junior Urte Bacianskaite recording two new personal-bests during the Carol Robinson Women's Winter Pentathlon.
It was a light first day of competition with only Bacianskaite competing in the pentathlon, along with senior Vitoria Alves. Bacianskaite posted her highest score in the pentathlon at 3,785 points to finish second, while also running her fastest 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.14 seconds. Alves scored 1,019 points to place seventh.
"Urte started the day with a PR and ended the day with a PR so that obviously was a step in the right direction." K-State track and field director Cliff Rovelto said.
In the first event of the day, in the 60-meter hurdles, Alves came in first at 8.49 seconds and Bacianskaite was fifth at 9.14 seconds.
During the high jump competition, Bacianskaite recorded a height of 1.60m/5-3. She followed with a first-place finish in the shot put with a final attempt of 14.07m/46-2.
In the long jump event, Bacianskaite recorded a length of 5.39m/17-8¼ to place second. The final event was the 800 meters, where she finished fourth with a time of 2:29.36, 2 seconds shy of a new personal-best.
"I think there were lots of positive signs but at the end of the day, the score is not indicative of the shape that she's in right now. So that's frustrating, but you just got to get it fixed." Rovelto said.
The Wildcats will compete again tomorrow (Saturday Dec. 10) in the K-State Winter Invitational with field events starting at 9:30 a.m. CT, with track events starting at 12:00 p.m. CT. Participating schools include Oklahoma, Nebraska, Haskell Indian Nations and William Carey.
