No. 19 Horned Frogs Finish Sweep of K-State Sunday

Mar 27, 2022 | Baseball

FORT WORTH, Texas – A two-out, two-run double from Cole Johnson tied the game in the top of the sixth, but the 19th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs scored the game's next eight runs in claiming an 11-3 victory and finishing a series sweep of K-State Sunday afternoon at Lupton Stadium.

Johnson finished the day 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in, all coming with two outs. His two-RBI double in the top of the sixth helped K-State (11-11, 0-3 Big 12) erase an early 3-0 deficit.

After allowing three runs on five hits in the first inning, starter Griffin Hassall settled in and kept the Horned Frogs scoreless over the next four innings, allowing three hits and retiring 11 of 13 in that stretch.

"It was a good start from Griff (Hassall), certainly good enough to give us a chance," head coach Pete Hughes said. "We weren't as offensive as we needed to be and as we were in the first two games. The matchup was there, but we didn't take advantage of it. Griff gave us a chance to get back into the game, and we did.

"But again, from the sixth inning on we've struggled. We've got to get better and make some adjustments. We'll have to figure it out, this team's got a lot of winning to do. We have to put together the offensive side and the defensive side every day."

Hassall pitched into the sixth, exiting the contest after allowing two singles. TCU (18-5, 5-1 Big 12) tacked on two more hits against reliever Collin Rothermel in the inning and answered K-State's three runs with three of its own.

David Bishop's RBI single capped the scoring in an inning that also included a sacrifice fly from Porter Brown and a triple by Elijah Nunez.

After an RBI single from Luke Boyers in the seventh inning, TCU's lead swelled to eight runs with a four-run eighth. The Frogs were aided by five free passes (four walks, one hit batter) from both Ty Ruhl and Tyson Neighbors, including two walks with the bases loaded, while batting around.

Hassall (3-3) finished the day with five earned runs allowed on 10 hits over his 5 1/3 innings. The junior righty did not issue a walk and struck out two.

In relief of Hassall, Rothermel, Ruhl and Neighbors combined to allow six earned runs on seven hits, walking five and striking out one over 2 2/3 innings.

All nine batters in TCU's lineup tallied a base hit, including multiple hits from six players. Nunez and Tommy Sacco each produced three-hit games while Bishop drove in three.

The Horned Frogs' 17 marked the second-highest total allowed this season from Wildcat pitchers.

K-State leadoff hitter Dominic Johnson was held without a hit for just the second time this season, as his 16-game hitting streak came to an end. His streak was the longest by any Wildcat since 2010.

Josh Nicoloff singled to extend his on-base streak to 17 games, the longest active streak on the team.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The first three TCU hitters in the first registered a hit, including a two-RBI triple from Bishop. An RBI groundout by Gray Rodgers capped a three-run frame, as the Frogs tallied five hits against Hassall in the inning.

The Cats got on the board in the top of the fourth, as Goodwin doubled and later scored on a single from Cole Johnson – both coming with two outs.

Johnson tallied his second run-scoring hit with two outs in the sixth. His two-run double scored Goodwin and Nicoloff and leveled the score, 3-3.

TCU retook the lead with three runs of its own in the home half of the inning, getting a sacrifice fly from Brown and an RBI single from Bishop. Eight Horned Frogs came to the plate in registering four hits off both Hassall and Rothermel.

The Frogs were aided by five free passes (four walks, one hit batter) from both Ruhl and Neighbors, including two walks with the bases loaded, while batting around in the eighth. TCU ended with four runs and got RBI singles from Rodgers and Sacco.
