Late Singles Comeback Not Enough For K-State, Falls to No. 42 Northwestern

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's tennis team had a tough battle against No. 42 Northwestern on Saturday (March 5), but late singles points were not enough as the Wildcats fell 4-2.
Winning the sole doubles match for K-State were seniors Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares. The duo took down Clarissa Hand and Briana Crowley 6-4 at the No. 1 position.
Dropping a close match was freshman Florentine Dekkers and senior Ioana Gheorghita. Northwestern's Hannah McColgan and Sydney Pratt were too much for the pair as they fell 7-5 at second doubles.
It was all Northwestern on court three as Justine Leong and Christina hand defeated freshman Dinara Alloyarova and senior Anna Turco 6-2.
Senior Rosanna Maffei, ranked No. 108 nationally and playing at No. 3 singles, closed out her singles match in straight sets and defeated Leong 6-4, 6-3.
Linares came out with a two-set victory over Pratt 7-6, 6-4.
In a nailbiter three-set contest, Turco claimed the opening set but was unable to keep momentum and fell to Christina Hand 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
Northwestern's Hand, ranked 70th in the nation, took set one against Job 6-4. Job forced a third set after coming back to sweep set two, 6-0. The Lyon, France native dropped the final set 6-3.
The Wildcats went to three sets in the match between Gheorghita and Crowley at No. 5 singles. It was Crowley who came out on top 7-6, 2-6, 6-4.
K-State's record falls to 6-4, while Northwestern moves to 5-3.
Next up for K-State is Big 12 Conference play as the Wildcats head to Stillwater to play Oklahoma State on Friday (March 11) at 5 p.m. CT.
