Vargas Leads K-State After First Round
Apr 22, 2022 | Women's Golf
HOCKLEY, Texas - Through 18 holes on Friday at the par-71, 6,249-yard Houston Oaks Golf Club, the Kansas State women's golf team is in ninth place at the 2022 Big 12 Championship, but the round included solid performances from Napua Glossner and Haley Vargas.
The Wildcats carded a 26-over par 310 opening round.
"We got off to a pretty solid start," head coach Kristi Knight said. "We got out of position too often on the back nine and we lost quite a few shots."
Vargas is leading the Cats in a tie for 15th place at 3-over par 74. The start puts the junior from Lubbock, Texas just two strokes off the top 10, where she would become the sixth Wildcat in school history to finish in the top 10 of a Big 12 Championship.
Next on the leaderboard is Glossner, who is tied for 23rd place at 4-over par 75. The sophomore played at a championship level throughout her front nine as carded three-straight birdies on holes 2-5. However, a double-bogey on hole 18 hurt her position. There is plenty of golf to play, and Glossner will have ample opportunities to rise up the standings again.
"Napua played a lot of good golf, but a couple of swings got her late. She has to remember the good," Knight said. "Haley was solid as well."
Heather Fortushniak recorded a 7-over par 78 first round and is tied for 33rd place. Remington Isaac and Manon Donche-Gay are both tied in 43rd place at 12-over par 83.
No. 16 Baylor is atop the standings at 4-over par 288 and holds a three-stroke lead over No. 38 Iowa State. No. 26 Caitlyn Macnab is in first place on the individual leaderboard after shooting a 3-under par 68 opening.
K-State will hope to improve its position when play resumes with the second round on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. The three-round, 54-hole Big 12 Championship will conclude on Sunday morning with the final round also starting at 8 a.m.
"We have to grind it out," Knight said. "There is a lot of golf left."
