TUCSON, Ariz. – The Kansas State women's golf team was unable to make up any ground on the leaderboard on Saturday during the second round of the MountainView Collegiate held at the par-72, 6,405-yard Preserve Golf Club in Tucson, Arizona.
The 33rd-ranked Wildcats recorded a second-round score of 4-over par 292, as they are tied for sixth place with a 36-hole score of 3-over par 579. K-State is tied with Missouri and sits four shots back of UTSA for fifth place.
"Today was a little frustrating as there was a lot of great golf – we just didn't really convert any other opportunities," said head coach Stew Burke. "I am proud of the ladies for not getting aggressive at the wrong times and sticking to the plan. We know we are going to need a monster round tomorrow to move up the leaderboard, but they are more than capable based on the golf I have seen this week. It will just be pedal to the metal to see where we end up."
Kansas State is led by sophomore Kelsey Chen, who is tied for ninth place at 2-under par 142 following an even-par round on Saturday. The Dalian, China, native was in line for her second-straight under-par score of the event as she was 3-under par at the turn, but three bogeys on the back 9 brought her back to even.
Three shots back and tied for 23rd place is senior Noa van Beek at 1-over par 145 after shooting a 73 on Saturday. The Oene, Netherlands, native was 2-over par through eight holes before a birdie on No. 9 and parring out the inward 9.
Sophomore Nanami Nakashima and freshman Keen Visavapattamawan are at 3-over par 147 and tied for 37th place. Nakashima posted a round of 2-over par 74 on Saturday, while Visavapattamawan went 3-over par. Junior Julia Ballester Barrio improved 12 spots on Saturday as she is tied for 63rd place with a 36-hole score of 7-over par 151. Her total includes a 1-over par second-round score that was carried by a bogey-free and 2-under par back 9.
The Wildcats' round of the day was turned in by freshman Casey Kang, who is competing as an individual. The Lanzhou, China, native produced a score of 2-under par 70 to climb 32 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 43rd place at 4-over par 148. She went bogey free on Saturday with birdies on her first hole, No. 10, and third hole, No. 12.
Freshman Stalee Fields and junior Alenka Navarro are also competing as individuals. Fields was unable to replicate an even-par round on Friday as she went 4-over par 76 and is tied with Kang for 43rd place. Navarro is tied for 77th place at 12-over par 156 following a 10-over par second round.
No. 25 Iowa State remains in command of the team lead at 15-under par 561, nine shots ahead of a new second-place team in Texas Tech as the Red Raiders improved five spots on the leaderboard during the second round. North Texas' Malisone Chanthapanya holds the 36-hole lead by one stroke at 7-under par 137.
A shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. (MST) begins final-round play of the MountainView Collegiate on Sunday as the Wildcats are paired with North Texas and UTSA. Live results can be followed on SCOREBOARD powered by Clippd.
