Cats Tied for 10th Through 18 Holes in Minnesota

LAKE ELMO, Minn. – Competing in one of the most prestigious events in all of women's collegiate golf, the Kansas State women's golf team recorded a first-round total of 18-over par 306 on Monday as the Wildcats are tied for 10th place in the Annika Intercollegiate Presented by 3M at the par-72, 6,432-yard Royal Golf Club.
Beginning on No. 10, the Wildcats played their first nine holes at 2-over par, but the front nine proved to be much more difficult as eight of those nine holes were statistically among the top 11 hardest holes of the day among the 12-team field.
"We got off to a nervous start but really settled in well toward the end of our first nine," head coach Stew Burke said. "Unfortunately, we made a few too many errors after making the turn and did not finish strong in the toughest part of the day. We have to stick to the plan and get off to a better start tomorrow morning."
The Wildcats were led on Monday by junior Nanami Nakashima, who is tied for 24th place following a round of 2-over par 74. The Kani, Japan, product played her first nine holes at 2-under par, but two bogeys and a double-bogey during her second nine put her over par on the day.
Senior Julia Ballester Barrio and freshman Amy Wang are tied for 42nd place at 5-over par 77. A product of Castellon, Spain, Ballester Barrio was even par through her first nine holes with one birdie, and she was 6-over par for the day before a birdie on her final hole, the par-5 9th.
Junior Kelsey Chen and sophomore Stalee Fields are one shot back of Ballester Barrio and Wang and are tied for 50th place. Chen recorded three birdies on the day, while Fields had two.
Wake Forest, the winner of last year's Tallahassee Regional, leads the event at 8-under par 280, while a trio of teams – Virginia, South Carolina and USC – are tied for second place at even-par 288. Virginia's Zoe Cusack holds a two-shot lead on the individual leaderboard following a round of 5-under par 67.
The second round of the Annika Intercollegiate Presented by 3M begins with tee times off Nos. 1 and 10 at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Live results can be followed on SCOREBOARD powered by Clippd.
